How one Ind. predator was unintentionally invited into homes
In a tale that may get even more chilling, federal law enforcement authorities continue to investigate what might end up as the largest "sextortion" case in the United States. Richard Leon Finkbiner of Clay County, Ind., has been arrested and charged with two counts of s*xual exploitation of children. The complaints filed said he used an online video chat website designed to randomly connect anonymous users. The Courier-Journal reports the website is Omegle.com.
Once the 14-year-old boys, one from Maryland and one from Michigan, were unknowingly recorded in a s*xually explicit pose, Finkbiner allegedly blackmailed them by threatening to post their clips online and to show them to friends if they did not record additional videos. One boy and his family went to authorities prior to making future videos, but the other was coerced into producing two more videos before confiding to his family.
"As a member of the law enforcement community, and more importantly, as a parent, these are the types of cases that keep me up at night, said U.S. Attorney Hogsett in a written press statement. "This defendant may not remember his alleged victims, but the true tragedy is that not one of them will ever forget."
In the course of their investigation, the FBI discovered thousands of s*xually explicit images and videos depicting hundreds of individuals, which they say may indicate the existence of many other victims. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana is urging anyone who may have been victimized or who may have information about possible victims to contact the Indianapolis Cybersquad Division of the FBI at (877)-542-8979.
