As a mom I am big on prevention. "Brush your teeth," "wear your bicycle helmet" and "wash your hands before you eat" are phrases that, like you, I have uttered a million times. Americans in general believe in prevention as well. We get annual check-ups. We buy insurance to avoid huge financial losses from an accident or death. We change our oil every 3000 miles. Yet, when it comes to raising children in a s*xually graphic society, too many families fail to take even the most basic precautions to shield children from content that can damage them for years or even a lifetime.
Consider these numbers from a recent nationally representative poll conducted by GFI software:
- Only 36% of parents use Web monitoring software or a Web filter to keep tabs on their teens' activities online, and to block inappropriate content.
- Half of teens say they do not know whether or not their parents are monitoring their Internet browsing.
- 42% of teens have cleared their browsing history at some point after using the Internet, and 5% do it often.
- 24% of teens admit to visiting a Web site intended for adults. 31% of boys admit they've visited adult sites, and 13% say they do so "often" or "sometimes".
Many of us have heard stories of families in crisis because a son or daughter had gotten mixed up with online p*rnography. Almost all of these families thought such a thing could never happen to them. One of our goals with FAMILY SPARK is to provide parents the best research and resources to help guide their children through the s*xually charged culture. This month we are pleased to announce our affiliate relationship with InternetSafety.com.
Our staff tested several Internet filtering products before choosing Safe Eyes as our recommended filter. If you do not have such software in your home, consider signing up for Safe Eyes today. Safe Eyes protection covers:

Be Aware: P*rn Harms |
|
A coalition of family and safety organizations is launching a four-week awareness campaign to highlight four major harms of p*rnography:
1. Addiction
2. Harm to Children
3. Violence Against Women
4. S*xual Trafficking
This week focuses on addiction. Many current and former p*rnography addicts got drawn into this material as children. That's another reason to take every precaution with computers and new technology. Be sure to check out the resources at PornHarms.com and let others know by forwarding this email. |
