A Problem as Big as the Titanic

June 2011

 Daniel Weiss

As a church leader, there's a good chance you have at some point encountered this question: "Can you help me stop looking at p*rnography?" The one requesting help may be fearful, ashamed or desperate. He may be in trouble at home or work. He rightly wants to change but finds he cannot. Invariably, his focus is solely on changing his problematic behavior. He usually will have no idea about the complex range of factors that have driven him to p*rnography in the first place. As a trusted spiritual guide, how do you counsel him in such a way as to lead to lasting change?

In the articles highlighted below, Christian counselor Rob Jackson explains how digging deeply into wounds of the past can help people sort out and understand why they act the way they do today, even why they are betraying their values and commitments.

In "The Three Levels of Sin," Jackson describes sin as not just an offense against God or another person, but as a wound that harms a person by separating him from God and others. As he put it, "Sin recycles the trauma of humanity." Once people understand the deadly influence of sin, they can begin to address the damage it has caused to their lives.

In "Understanding Intimacy Disorder and Addictions," Jackson explains how problematic behavior such as p*rnography use or infidelity is usually just the tip of the iceberg. People too often focus only on the problematic behavior above the surface without understanding that beneath the surface is distorted thinking, wounded emotions and a spirit hungry for intimacy. This kind of disintegration is healed by reintegrating a person's body, mind and spirit through a renewed intimacy with God. Like a stream of fresh water, a restored relationship with God can begin to clean out the muddy areas of our thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

I hope these resources will help you guide those wounded souls in your care. As always, if anything we have highlighted has helped you, we'd love to hear your story.

May God richly bless you.

The Three Levels of Sin

Part 1: The undeniable fact is that sin has altered everyone we love, and marred every good thing - even the Son of God.

Part 2: From cradle to grave, other people hinder our growth in every area by sinning against us.

 Understanding Intimacy Disorder and Addictions

Part 1: The human soul was designed for intimate relationship; recovery occurs when we are restored in oneness with our Lord

Part 2: Our thoughts serve as signals that something deeper is wrong.

Part 3: Integrating our spirit, emotions, thoughts, and body under God's oversight leads to an internal transformation.

Six years ago, Louisville Metro passed a s*xually oriented business ordinance that many considered one of the most protective in the nation for limiting the harmful effects of the s*x industry on families and this community. The s*x industry fought the ordinance every step of the way, appealing every court decision, until the Kentucky Supreme Court upheld Louisville Metro's ordinance. Now, apparently, those businesses are going to fight every citation issued under the ordinance in court. This comes as no surprise, as a common tactic of s*x businesses and their attorneys is to delay and drag out everything they can, hoping to make local citizens weary of the stand they are taking for their families and community while the s*x businesses continue to profit off of exploited and victimized women.
