Mary Ann GramigThere's a lot of anxiety among the s*xually oriented businesses of Louisville since tough new--and constitutionally sound--regulations have taken effect. Some clubs have responded to the law by refusing to get licensed and others won't comply with restrictions that prohibit contact between dancers and patrons, as shown in this WAVE 3 undercover report. Every legitimate business has to be licensed to operate, but strip clubs think they are immune from this requirement. We are eager to report that there is an upcoming opportunity for Kentuckiana residents to show support of the new law. On June 29th, in Jefferson District Court, Louisville Metro will prosecute the first citations issued under the s*xually oriented business ordinance  upheld by the Kentucky Supreme Court in April of 2010. Please join us at the courthouse so that the judge and Metro officials know you support full law enforcement for the purpose of protecting this community's families and children!  We must continue to stand firm! We need you to be there on the 29th! Please see below for more details.

As Louisville Metro begins enforcement of the law, the clubs are showing their desperation and fear. One recently held a shameless event called "Save Our Strippers." This was billed as a show of support for the women whose jobs were in jeopardy if the laws were enforced. The Facebook page for the event included many "supportive" messages, but the truth was revealed by one exasperated man who wondered why no one showed up. "Where is everyone?" he wrote. "Doesn't anyone care about these women?"

That's exactly the point about s*x businesses. They don't care about the women apart from what profits they create. Club owners and patrons treat women as nothing more than s*xual commodities with nominal entertainment value. Despite all the empty rhetoric and smokescreens about s*xual empowerment, freedom of expression, and women's rights, there is no true concern for the health and safety of women.  One local radio DJ even commented that ROCK should just leave these poor women alone since they were "too stupid" to do anything else.  Sadly, this kind of insult is common for those caught up in stripping and the s*x industry and reveals what too many people believe about the value of these women.

A society that truly cared for women wouldn't treat them as show cattle and subject them to sexual violence as a condition of employment. A society that truly cared for women would surround the most vulnerable with love and work towards healing the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual abuse that left them with few, if any, legitimate choices in life. A society that truly cared for women would never treat them as s*xual objects or support any business that saw abusive s*xuality as sport or entertainment.

ROCK has been fighting to build stronger communities and families for more than six years now. From the very beginning we have been concerned for the women caught up in s*xually oriented businesses, as well as for the owners, managers and patrons who visit these clubs. We don't see those who disagree with us as our enemies, but as fellow humans in desperate need of healing and the truth. As we continue to walk forward, we welcome your thoughts, prayers and financial gifts. As you feel led, please consider how you can contribute to the work of ROCK. Together we can create a society that truly cares for women, children and men.

Join ROCK on June 29 to show support for families!

Six years ago, Louisville Metro passed a s*xually oriented business ordinance that many considered one of the most protective in the nation for limiting the harmful effects of the s*x Judge_gavelindustry on families and this community. The s*x industry fought the ordinance every step of the way, appealing every court decision, until the Kentucky Supreme Court upheld Louisville Metro's ordinance. Now, apparently, those businesses are going to fight every citation issued under the ordinance in court. This comes as no surprise, as a common tactic of s*x businesses and their attorneys is to delay and drag out everything they can, hoping to make local citizens weary of the stand they are taking for their families and community while the s*x businesses continue to profit off of exploited and victimized women.

Join ROCK and Louisville Metro on Wednesday, June 29 at 9 a.m. in Jefferson District Court to show your support for families and this community! The location is the Louis D. Brandeis Hall of Justice, Room 203, 600 W. Jefferson St., Louisville, KY. Please be respectful at all times in the courtroom.

Another town saved!

Congratulations to the residents of Eliot, Maine, who just passed tough new s*xually oriented business ordinances.  When threatened by a proposed strip club, the town council passed a limited moratorium on s*xually oriented businesses and then proceeded to draft new ordinances.  They were recently unanimously approved. Read more about Eliot here. The lesson is clear: this can be done anywhere...and it needs to be done everywhere! If your town needs help, please contact ROCK here.
