September Happenings
September 6 - Sand Art! Sand is a naturally occurring granular material made up of finely divided rock and mineral particles that is used for many purposes including making bricks, concrete, and glass. 11:00 am - Make your own sand creation at G.WIZ with supplies from ALEX Toys. ALEX items can also be purchased in the G.WIZ Gift Shop.
September 13 - Origami and Space Satellites! Originating in China, origami (oru - folding; kami - paper) is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. The basis for origami is to create shapes through geometric folds and crease patterns. Using the Miura map fold or rigid fold, this method has also been applied to deploy large solar panel arrays for space satellites. 11:00 am - Exercise your talent in folding.
September 20 - Lizards Around the World !
Tired of sitting at home and catching flies? Discover how many different types of lizards exist and where they live. 11:00 am - Make a "Lizards Around the World" map and impress your friends, family and teachers with lizard facts.
September 27 - Out-of-This-World Boomerang!
The boomerang is a simple wooden curved stick and dates back to ancient tribes in Europe and Egypt where it was used to hunt birds. The Aborigines of Australia used it not only for hunting but also for communication. The design is an airfoil thrown with a high spin and some are designed to return to the one who threw it but this usually requires an area as large as a football field. Astronauts were once given the challenge to find a design that would work in the middeck of a shuttle. 11:00am - Construct your own out-of-this-world boomerang and try your hand at getting it to return to you. |
