How To Care For Your Oriental Rug
Click the label for large picture.
Oriental Rugs and fine area rugs are generally made of wool and are easily and economically maintained. Rugs of wool are extremely durable and consistently out-perform other materials. Unlike other fibers, wool is much more resilient, cleans better and looks clean longer.

To the right is a picture of a tag we came across on an antique rug brought in for cleaning. In all my years of rug cleaning I have never heard of the recommendations about the padding. I believe that they are specifically referring to what is known as "waffle padding". Anyway I thought this was interesting.

Tips To Keep Your Oriental and Wool Rugs
Healthy and Clean

  1. Cleaning: Professionally cleaning your wool rugs insures a skilled cleaning that brings out the richness of color and softness of the wool. Depending on the amount of traffic, a professional washing is recommended every one to three years for the cleaning of your wool rugs.
  2. Rotation: To insure even wear, your rug should be rotated once a year. Depending on the traffic, the rotation may vary from six months to two years.
  3. Vacuuming: Wool rugs, like most carpeting should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt, insects, allergens and all other debris that damage the rug. Be careful not to vacuum the fringes. click here for a good rule of thumb for vacuuming frequency.
  4. Padding: Just like carpet, area rugs wear out from the back. A quality pad used under your rug helps protect it from pre-mature wear and tear, soiling and slippage.
  5. Restoration: In case of damage, just about any problem has a solution with a professional restoration. Investment quality and antique rugs sometimes need to be re-wovern. An experienced professional should always be consulted in these matters.
  6. Stain Removal: First remove as much excess and solid matter. When spills occur, dilute with plenty of water. Blot from the edge of the spill towards the center. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the area. The quicker you can attend to a spill the better. Click here for a more in-depth spot removal guide. As always, call us if you have any hesitation about removing spots from your wool rug.

My new favorite show is Criminal Minds. It is a detective show but what makes this team of investigators different is that they are the FBI's elite criminal profilers. They study behavioral patterns and deduce from the crime scenes an accurate description of the subject they are looking for. (This is also not a bad skill to develop if you are a parent of more than one child)

Each episode begins and ends with a quote. Because the show explores the world of human behavior, I find the quotes relatable to both the criminal and the common man. Below are a few of my favorites from the show.

"There is no refuge from memory and remorse in this world. The spirits of our foolish deeds haunt us, with or without repentance."

Gilbert Parker

"Cleanliness becomes more important when godliness is unlikely."

P.J. O'Rourke

"In youth we learn; in age we understand."
  Austrian novelist, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

"I have loved to the point of madness; That which is called madness, That which to me, is the only sensible way to love."

Francoise Sagan

  •  Club Soda

In this edition we are not talking about removing spots caused by club soda. Instead, I want to turn you on to a great "home remedy". Club Soda is a secret weapon and a must-have for all Supermoms. It is especiallly effective at removing spills that have just occured. Simple carpet stains such as spilled food and/or drinks can easily be removed with club soda. The carbonation works as a stain lifter and helps to clean the area without much manual effort. Plus, club soda is environmentally friendly and cheap!

  • 1 If the carpet stain is fresh (wet), absorb extra moisture by blotting the stain with a clean, dry cloth. In many cases, this will absorb part of the stain as well, thereby making the job even easier.

  • 2 Apply a small amount of club soda to the stain and allow it to carbonate (fizz) into the stain. Do not saturate the stain but merely cover it.

  • 3 For new stains, allow about 15 minutes for the club soda to work. For set-in stains, 15 to 30 minutes may be necessary.

  • 4 Gently rub the area with a damp towel, working towards the center. The tougher the stain, the more times you may need to repeat this process. Never use a brush to scrub the carpet.
  • 5 After the stain is removed, absorb excess liquid with a dry, clean cloth.

  • 6 (optional) Pour club soda in a glass with ice, a twist of lime and your favorite vodka and celebrate a job well done ;)
