GIVING THANKS ... NOVEMBER 2008

In the midst of "an economic crisis of historic proportions, we still have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

We give thanks to all of you in our 'bandwidth' and beyond for electing Barak Obama as President, a Democratic Senate and a Democratic House of Representatives - for a start. Anne Hoiberg, CAWA Power Sharing Policy Chair does a full California report in our December issue.

We give thanks to all of you who GOT OUT THE VOTE and worked hard the past eight years to keep hope alive and who stayed at your 'post' through thick and thin, floods and wars, with and without resources. You were a force behind the tsunami that turned this country around so we can now move forward to give all women a voice - locally and globally.

We give thanks to WIN, our mother ship, for nurturing and growing CAWA with primary support coming from you, our base. You can see our accomplishments in the side bar.
We need your help now more than ever to keep up with the technology demands on the CAWA million women network, now reaching into 24 other US Women Connect states and women globally.

Join CAWA now! If each organization or individual pays an annual membership fee on a sliding scale of $10 to $100, we can continue to maintain a dynamic network on the ground and on the Internet. But there is more you can do and get from CAWA.

It's easy. All you need to do is click the Donate button on our website, or print out and mail in the online CAWA Membership Form. This simple action and your support is an affirmation of why we have joined together and must keep on moving forward.

WIN and CAWA Expand for Digital Inclusion

WIN and CAWA continues to expand our Internet technology for a more effective and interactive on-line activist community and for adaptability to "women behind the digital curtain" - an on-going CAWA focus. Amy Aquilino, WIN Internet Technology Associate, writes about our readiness for the new era of net-advocacy:

We invite all CAWA and WIN partners to visit our Blog and Youtube pages. Our blog (WINWOMENSPEAK) is accessed by clicking the link on the WIN homepage or womenspeak page. On the WIN weblog, there is a blog titled "read before blogging' which gives you a step by step tutorial on how to use the site.

Watch for our monthly WIN Radio podcast in 2009 featuring interviews with WIN and CAWA activists.
Get upcoming events, readings, rallies and links to other blogs and websites.

Our Youtube page is also accessed by the link on WIN's homepage or by searching for "winwomenspeak" on Youtube. WIN has NPO status on Youtube which gives us all a larger presence on the web. Come view our videos, leave comments, and pass the word!

WIN and CAWA SPOKE OUT TO GET OUT THE VOTE

Continuing WIN and CAWA's mission to give all women a voice, particularly our sisters who have not had a forum for their voices, WIN held an energizing and thought provoking SPEAKOUT on October 7, 2008 at Delancey Street Club Room with MARCUS BOOKS, as part of our Get Out the Vote campaign. Panelists were MC Rose Aguilar, Author and Host of 'Your Call' Radio on KALW; Irene Lu, US Representative Afghan Women's Network and WIN Board of Directors; Alicia Wang, Candidate for San Francisco County Supervisor, Dist. 1; Dr. Raye Richardson, Founder/Owner MARCUS BOOKS; Junie Mattice, Tolowa, Northcoast; who spoke passionately about Human Rights and the Indigenous people of California. You can read and respond to her remarks at our Weblog.

Red Highways: A Liberal's Journey Into the Heartland

Book Review by Lee Montgomery "Lee M", Kansas City, MO.

"Touching, Entertaining and true to the Heart"
Rose Aguilar's "Red Highways" is simply a delight. A road trip tale that never fails to surprise and enlighten.
A political novel that is empathetic and spares the demagoguery. A look into the American lives, feelings and opinions that the mass media, and many politicians, fail to listen to; but Ms. Aguilar does. A seasoned radio interviewer, Rose Aguilar takes the time to listen to the denizens of the road and residents of the four states that she and her companion traveled through (Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Montana- I for one would love to see her cover the other 46!).
There are conversations and spirited debates and of course, opinions will differ across our diverse nation. However, the ones presented here are meticulously genuine and represent views not necessarily expected from those who gladly share them. To listen is a simple courtesy not always extended, and rewarded beyond measure. The `Red Highways' lead from gun shows to churches, from fairs to the living rooms of generous strangers, and it doesn't matter quite as much how much Americans' ideologies and politics differ as we come to find over Ms. Aguilar's four months of interaction and interviewing. We find here in the many delightful and heart-rending tales of the road just how unified we all could be, and how much our senses of spirit and humor survive the hard yet hopeful times so many of us share.
And what a fine stocking-stuffer for family and friends...no matter their political persuasions!

Together, we have:

· Built a network of 20 county regions and over 700 organizations connected via Internet to implement the California and global women's agendas (Beijing Platform for Action).

· Created electronic (e)lists for action alerts, working e-groups, and platform for a central repository of information exchange, dialogue and action on California women's agendas.

· Sent a weekly average of five action alerts with numerous notices and late breaking news resources.

· Launched 'Reaching Women Behind the Digital Divide', to give marginalized women a stronger voice in local, California and U.S. policy corridors.

· Convened 5 regional and 3 state Call to Action assemblies for prioritizing and updating our agenda.

· Published three CAWA Report and Plan of Actions: 1996, 2000, 2005, drafted on the 'ground' - reviewed and edited on line.

· Took the California Women's Agenda to the U.S. Secretary of State in 2000 for inclusion in the Beijing+5 Platform for Action.

· Piloted U.S. Women Connect (USWC), a national women's action network modeled after CAWA, as a base for the U.S. women's agenda.

· Hosted and mentored Afghan, Japanese, Ugandan and other women leaders, and continues to partner projects with them, i.e. Ugandan Land Grant Project and Kabul University Gender Studies Department.

· Provided delegate presence at United Nations Women's Commission meetings for 10 years through WIN, an NGO consultative to the UN.

What we are positioned to do with you:

· Continue these groundbreaking networks and initiatives, and

· Maintain and expand the reach of our virtual network and go deeper and wider 'on the ground'.

· Provide timely action alerts, analysis and information not accessible to all women and girls.

· Activate Leadership Circles and the CAWA Legislators' Council for interactive dialogue on mutual benefits to activists and policy makers.

· Convene topical regional and state assemblies to address and identify priorities and strategies for focused action.

· Forge funding partnerships and collaborations for increased impact on critical concerns .

· Conduct research necessary to track network 'voltage' potential and success.

· Continually update the 'system' and databases with software and technical assistance.

Our world has changed dramatically on the ground and on the Internet since we came together in Huairou,China and San Francisco in 1995.

We must fuel our networks to keep up with the changing technologies and politics that challenge us daily!
