How the extraordinary interest in the philosophy contained in Tolle's A New Earth is part of the evolution of consciousness described in the Mayan Calendar.

Oprah Winfrey told her TV audience that bringing Eckhart Tolle's book, A New Earth, to viewers around the world was her life purpose. She made it her book club pick and offered a free live webcast of Eckhart and herself discussing the book and answering questions. Within several weeks over 500,000 worldwide registered for the online teaching and millions of books were sold - more than any other book club pick, setting a record at Barnes and Noble. Can this extraordinary interest be explained?

Mayan Calendar and the Eras: In his DVD, The Mayan Calendar, Yukon Territory, 2004, the late Ian Xel Lundgold* brilliantly delineates the timeline of consciousness recorded in the stepped stone Mayan pyramid. Each of the nine steps represents an entire era which is further divided into 13 sections containing 7 Days (periods of light) and 6 Nights (periods of darkness). The days bring a specific shift or increase in consciousness, the nights apply that consciousness and both follow the primary activity and focus of that era.

Evolutionary Steps: The 1st step began with the 'big bang' 16.4 billion years ago in which Cellular consciousness was characterized by Action/Reaction. The modern era coincides with the Industrial Revolution on the First Day of the 7th step (1755). Planetary consciousness combined with Power. The 7th day of that era brought mind expansion through the Internet. In 1999, amidst fears of Y2K, the 8th step was reached: Galactic Consciousness, characterized by Ethics. The top step begins on February 10, 2011. Universal consciousness will focus through Conscious Co-creation.

Timeline for Change: Each succeeding era is 20 times faster. The period of the days and nights grow shorter. Time itself is not speeding up, but processing of consciousness and change moves ever more rapidly. Until 1999, each day and night was 19.7 years long, giving the mind plenty of time to adjust to and apply changes. Planetary Consciousness had 244 years to address Power. Currently, each day and night is only 360 days long. The 8th level lasts 12 years. Reality redefines with each discovery about the solar system, galaxy and revelations about crimes and scandals. Stress increases as the mind struggles to keep up with little certainty of the patterns of life. During the last step, shifts will occur every 20 days. Universal Consciousness through Conscious Co-Creation lasts less than a year.

Eckhart Tolle and A New Earth: Lundgold states that with each shift, the needed tools are given. Two years before the shift into Galactic Consciousness, Eckhart Tolle published The Power of Now. With a comprehensible approach to spiritual wisdom, Tolle described a simple way to relieve stress and drama. Focus within, follow the breath, feel the body, achieve detached observation and inner peace. He drew many readers and a large audience for workshop presentations but worldwide interest would take another book, 11 more years and the endorsement of a major, trusted celebrity.

Tolle says the idea of A New Earth arose from the stillness as a new way of presenting his message. The title, from the Book of Revelations (John 21, verse 1: "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth. . ."), contains the promise of better times. The book explains that the next evolutionary leap is a shift in human consciousness itself. Releasing the grip of the ego mind to allow a higher understanding paves the way to Conscious Co-creation. Tolle's book is a powerful tool to prepare for the shift into a new heaven and earth in 2012. The overwhelming response to Oprah's endorsement shows that human consciousness is ready.
