    Community Council News

The Kennedy Heights Community Council meets tomorrow, October 18th. As always there will be lots of good information including some exciting news about the Kennedy Heights Cultural Center.

Also there will be someone from Recyclebank, a city initiative that is challenging neighborhoods to increase their recycling efforts. 70% of city residents are using their recycling bins while 73% of our neighbors in Pleasant Ridge residents are taking advantage of Cincinnati's recycling program. If Kennedy Heights can increase our recycling efforts by 10%, the KHCC will receive a $100 incentive prize. There are other challenge incentives that are being reviewed by the Council.

Reminder: On collection weeks, please place your bin at the curb with the opening toward the street for easier and faster collection by the recycling trucks.

They will be giving us the Kennedy Heights information as well as talking to us about the challenge. Everyone is welcome to attend to find out more! The meeting is from 7:30-9:00 in the auditorium of Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church.

Kennedy Heights Arts Center is pleased to present Click VII, our seventh annual exhibition devoted entirely to the medium of photography.

Click VII features the American Society of Media Photographers' "One and Only Item" Show. For this show, ASMP members of the Ohio Valley Chapter were given an item - this year, a marble - to be photographed in any way they wished. The only stipulation was that the marble must appear in the photograph.

The exhibit runs through November 12.

    Neighborhood Notes

Thursday evening October 20th a forum, in which Kennedy Heights Community Council Vice-President Clete Benken is one of two keynote speakers will be held regarding a development concept for the proposed Red Bank Corridor/Dunbar Parkway; a Corridor/Parkway that has the potential to impact our neighborhood---in negative or positive ways. It would be well to have many KH residents at the forum, if for no other reason than to manifest our solidarity with Madisonville and Oakley.

Don't forget to vote in the upcoming election on Tuesday November 2nd. There are many issues and contests that will impact our neighborhood!

The City of Cincinnati will begin its winter schedule for garbage collection on Monday, October 3, 2011. Garbage collection will begin one hour later than the Summer Schedule.

Citizens should be aware that actual collection at their residence or place of business may occur more or less than an hour later due to a combination of the later start time and heavier traffic volumes at the later starting time.

Reminder: Place trash at your curb by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day and no earlier than 5:00 p.m. the preceding day. Waste containers must be removed before the end of the day on which the waste was collected.

Please visit 5916000.com, or call 591-6000 for more information.

From our friends at OKI (The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments) :
The storm drains at the end of your driveway could be collecting more than water. Stormwater runoff is an increasing problem in our region. It occurs when water or melting snow flows over paved roads, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, rooftops, patios and other hard surfaces. Along the way, the runoff picks up debris, pathogens, sediments, chemicals and other pollutants and eventually drains to lakes, rivers or streams. In heavy rainstorms, polluted runoff also flows into waterways from treated lawns, construction sites and croplands. Why is this harmful? The pathogens and chemicals can eventually pollute our drinking water sources. The stormwater runoff also harms plants and animals. Sediments cloud the water, stunting aquatic plant growth.

What can we do to reduce the problem? When watering your lawn, don't overdo it. When trying to get rid of garden pests, use an organic pesticide that won't add potentially dangerous chemicals to the ground. In your backyard, you can always make a compost pile to dispose of your yard clippings and biodegradable leftovers without wasting them. This is also a great way to recycle. Think twice about washing your own car, you could be wasting money by letting the water run the whole time. This also washes all the grease and car fluids down the storm drain. Taking your vehicle through the car wash where the water is recycled. You can also dispose of your car fluids after a do-it-yourself oil change by taking them to a designated drop-off or recycling location.

OKI is responsible for water quality management planning in the Tri-State region as an outgrowth of the 1972 Clean Water Act. The law's main goal has been to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of public waters.
