Do Your Share For Cleaner Air |
 |
Our friends at the The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana
(OKI) Regional Council of Governments pass
along these 10 simple solutions to save money
on gas while helping the environment.
1. Walk or ride a bike when you are
traveling
short distances. This is a great, healthy
way to save money on gas and decrease harmful
emissions.
2. Carpool or take advantage of commuter
services like OKI's RideShare program when
traveling to work or school. For more
information, visit
www.RideShareOnline.org.
3. Combine trips instead of running
errands
on separate days; 1.7 billion tons of carbon
are produced annually in order to fuel U.S.
vehicles.
4. Use public transportation such as the
Metro or TANK. A full bus is equivalent to
taking 40 cars off the road during rush hour
traffic.
5. Maintain your vehicle. Simple
things such
as keeping your tires inflated, getting
regular oil changes and replacing dirty air
filters will increase gas mileage up to 13
percent. Did you know that under-inflated
tires cost U.S. drivers 2 million gallons of
gas daily?
6. Drive less than 60 mph. Gas mileage
rapidly decreases once vehicles begin
traveling more than 60 mph. According to
www.FuelEconomy.gov, "each 5 mph you drive
more than 60 mph is like paying an additional
$0.20 per gallon for gas."
7. Avoid quick accelerations and sudden
stops. Driving at a moderate pace can
decrease your fuel consumption by 33
percent.
8. Do not idle your vehicle. Idling
your car
for as little as 10 minutes a day uses more
than 27 gallons of gas a year.
9. Telecommute. Arrange conference calls
instead of leaving the office for meetings.
10. Decrease use of gasoline or diesel
powered lawn equipment. Americans use 800
million gallons of gas on lawnmowers every
year, and more than 17 million gallons of gas
are spilled each year by Americans refueling
lawn equipment. So when you do use your
gasoline powered lawn equipment, do so after
6:00 p.m. to reduce emissions.
There are many ways to save money at the pump
and help the environment. Don't let gas
prices control your life! Take action by
following these tips and spreading the word.

program visit www.DoYourShare.org or call

Neighborhood Notes |
 |
On 9/2/08 you are invited to participate in
an initial meeting to begin to lay out
priorities and options for the Community
Council budget that will be in effect for
calendar year 2009. Almost all of our
$27,200 budget is flexible and would benefit
from your input regarding priorities. The
meeting will be held at the Council offices
on 9/2/08 from 7:00 to 8:00. If you are
unable to attend this meeting but would like
to share your thoughts or discuss this
further, please contact Kevin Holt at 396-6320.

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity
that will help help your community? Are you
concerned about the quality of life in your
neighborhood but wonder if there is anything
that you can do about it? The Kennedy
Heights Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) may
be just what you are looking for. Members of
COPP receive extensive police training. They
walk on patrol through the neighborhood at
least once each month with three or more
members. Any problems that they observe are
reported to the police or the appropriate
city department. Patrols are in contact with
the police via police radio.
Kennedy Heights doesn't seem to have as many
problems as it did when COPP was started here
about six years ago. District 2's Captain
Wiesman says that community involvement is a
big factor in this crime reduction. He also
says that this is no time to be complacent.
We need to keep vigilant. Joining COPP is a
way that you can meet with other concerned
neighbors to help keep Kennedy Heights a safe
place to live.
The next training session begins Thursday,
August 7 and continues on August 14 and
August 23 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. each night.
There will be another training session
starting in October (October 30, November 6,
and November 13). For more information or an
application, please contact Michele
Dragga at
mmdragga@yahoo.com.

Year Program. More details on the Kennedy
