    The first Kennedy Heights Community Council meeting of the new year is Tuesday. With several important items, we hope you'll be able to join us.


    Tuesday's Meeting

    At the Kennedy Heights Community Council meeting this Tuesday (January, 15th - 7:30pm) those in attendance will vote on the Community Council's 2008 budget.

    This will give those interested an opportunity to approve, revise or reject specific grant requests to the City of Cincinnati through Invest in Neighborhoods.

    These grants are for the amounts of $10,000 and $7,000, and provide the primary source of funding for our Neighborhood.

    Also at this meeting, meet the new executive director for the Kennedy Heights Arts Center, Ms. Ellen Muse Lindeman. There will also be a special presentation from the KH Montessori Center, a neighborhood institution for more than 40 years.

    KH Arts Center - A Call to artists

    The Kennedy Heights Arts Center is delighted to announce a call to all interested artists to submit their work for "heART of ART, an artistic expression of love."

    The interpretation of this theme can be broad, diverse and imaginative in scope. The exhibition will include art forms in a variety of different media, including but not limited to, sculpture, photography, paintings, pottery, glass and other forms of expression.

    Only artists aged 18 years or older are eligible to respond to this specific call.

    Ballet Tech - Sunday Jazz Jam Sessions

    ballet tech cincinnati will host monthly Jazz Jam Sessions on the third Sunday of each month, starting on January 20, 2008 from 6-9PM. The Jam Sessions are open to the public, and offer a unique opportunity for jazz musicians of all ages and skill levels.

    Musicians can participate as performers or simply observe skilled jazz musicians in action, and audience members can enjoy great jazz music from a variety of performers in a relaxed atmosphere. The Jazz Jam Sessions will be a great venue for jazz music in a no smoking/no alcohol venue that is comfortable for performers and audience members of all ages and offers professional artists, college and high school musicians a venue to perform together. The House Band will provide keyboard, drum set, amplifiers, mikes and a rhythm section for sit in musicians. Admission is only $5 and soft drinks, juices and snacks will be available for purchase.     African Drum and Dance comes to ballet tech cincinnati

    ballet tech cincinnati will host new West Indian African Drum and Dance classes at its Kennedy Heights World Headquarters at 6543 Montgomery Road starting on Saturday, January 19, 2007.

    This unique African drumming class will focus on rhythms from Nigerian and various other West African traditions.

    The hour-long class will present authentic rhythms, teaching correct hand techniques while providing the cultural history behind the rhythms. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of traditional Nigerian and African drums and playing styles. A one-hour African Dance class will follow. Both classes are led by a 16 year veteran of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Adeleke Onanuga.

    Classes will be held weekly on Saturdays, starting January 19th at 12 noon to 2 PM. Drum class is $10 per session. Dance class is $10 per session. Take both classes for only $15. For more information, visit www.ballettechcincinnati.org or http://dugombas.com or call 513.307.6365.

    A resident of Kennedy Heights appointed to a leadership role
    The Cincinnati Enquirer recently reported that Mr. Lamont Taylor was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority.

    A resident of Kennedy Heights recognized as a Top Lawyer
    In the January 2008 edition of Cincinnati Magazine Al Gerhardstein, a long time resident of KH, was identified as one of the Top 50 lawyers in Cincinnati. Al's firm, Gerhardstein and Branch, specializes in Civil Rights and First Amendment issues. (The attorneys recognized as Top Lawyers are those who received the highest point totals in the 2008 Ohio Super Lawyers nomination, research and blue ribbon review process.)

    A resident of Kennedy Heights is a member Nick Lachey's winning Choir
    The Cincinnati Enquirer reported (December 22) that a member of Lachey's choir that recently won NBC's the "Clash of the Choirs," is a KH resident---Carrie Scott-Taylor. Carrie is reported to be a "stay-home mother, member of the Fulfilled Christian music group with cousin John Scott" (Ernie knows John through the United Way). Carrie was featured on NBC's 12-19-07 program "with her daughter Endiah, 8, who is treated monthly at Children's Hospital Medical Center for sickle-cell anemia; Carrie has two other children, Edward, 17, and Eriah, 14; Carrie is a 1998 SCPA graduate."

    A journal article about Kennedy Heights
    Jim Cebula, a long-time resident of Kennedy Heights, has written an article about Kennedy Heights: "Creating a Multiracial Community in Post-World War II Cincinnati. The Kennedy Heights Experiment." Ohio Valley History, Fall 2007. Jim is Professor of History at Raymond Walters College.

    Woodford Spuce Up
    Woodford School and Community Care Week Employees from Fifth Third Bank were volunteers who recently devoted a day to do some landscaping at Woodford School.
