On Monday May 11, 2009 CRTMA is pleased to announce the introduction of brand new Transit buses powered by compressed natural gas! |
Green Thoughts
|
- Compared to diesel, average CNG buses emit:
- 85%
percent less particulate matter (PM)
- 90% percent less
carbon monoxide (CO),
- 55% less nitrogen oxide (NOx), and
- 20% less carbon
dioxide (CO2) compared to diesel-fueled counterparts.
- Approximately 95% of the natural gas supplies originate in North
America, reducing dependence on foreign oil, and minimizing the environmental costs of fuel transport.
- Natural gas is lighter-than-air. It does not present the threat to soil
and ground water contamination posed by diesel in the event of a spill.
- EZRide buses replace approximately fifteen corporate shuttles,
reducing congestion and preventing roughly 200,000 shuttle VMT per year.
- By changing vendors in 2008, CRTMA reduced "deadhead" mileage between vendor yard and Cambridge by at least 65,000 shuttle VMT per year.
- Each bus is equipped to carry two bicycles for multi-modal commuting.
