I started running when I was 14 years old. I was in cross country, basketball and track in high school. After high school I decided to focus on running. One day at the gym I was running and felt good and ended up going 13 miles - the furthest I had ever gone. In my mind I thought - if I can run 13, I can run a marathon! So at age 20, I ran my first marathon in Duluth, MN. I loved the experience so I continued to run marathons which included one in Anchorage, Alaska. In 1998 I decided to step up the game and run the Pikes Peak marathon in Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak's summit is at 14,110 ft which has an oxygen level of about 50% of that at sea level. I did that one two years in a row, with times of 6:58 and 6:26 respectively. After running for that length of time, I figured I could run ultramarathons, which are races longer than the standard 26.2 miles for a marathon. In the years I ran ultras, I ran several 50km races (31.2 miles), 12 hour races, 24 hour races and two 50 mile distances. For several years after that I switched my focus into triathlons - running mostly sprint and some Olympic distances. I had accomplished many things in my life except for one life-long dream - the Ironman triathlon. On Sept 11th of this year I finally accomplished that goal, competing and finishing the Ironman in Madison with a time of 12 hours 28 minutes. I've run over 120 races adding up to over 1400 miles and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Being a part of a gym has always been important to me. I've always needed treadmills, stationary bikes and weights for strength training. Razor sharp has been a crucial part in achieving my Ironman goal and maintaining overall fitness. The master's swimming class was a key part because swimming has always been my weakest point in triathlons. Up until this past January, I could only swim well enough to not drown! The instructors taught me the correct techniques and offered challenging workouts. Honestly that was what motivated me to get in the pool! When I first started in January, I could barely swim 4 laps without having to stop, and in the weeks before the Ironman I was swimming over a mile at a time without problems.

Biking in the winter time always poses problems, so I was a regular attendee at the spin classes. Working out inside is always mentally challenging but going to a class that mixes up the monotony of straight pedaling, really prepared me for the outdoor biking season. I was always in favor of Alan's 80's CD to bike to!

I've also participated in running races with the Razor Sharp team. I ran the Lighthouse 10 mile run in the summer which had a great turnout number of people from the gym. It was fun to see others out there and I felt I was part of a team again. We actually did pretty well in the standings in that race too!

The variety of weights and strength training equipment really helped develop my physical strength along with core strength. After a personal training session with Alan, I was introduced to other types of exercises I've never tried before. I am about to take a physical agility test for Kenosha Fire Department and Alan focused specifically on exercises that mimicked what I will be doing on the actual test.

Right now I'm excited to be part of the Total Body Transformation program. My focus has always been cardio based and especially this year I put in a lot of hours running and biking. The Total Body Transformation introduced me to the TRX system which I've always wanted to try. It is a great change in routine and I'm already seeing changes in my physical strength and core strength. I like to be pushed and I like doing new things - the adventure boot camp class is so much fun using "non-traditional" exercise equipment like pushing tractor tires around the gym!

  • 3 Tips for Cool Weather Skin Care
  • Tip 1: Swap your soaps
In the summertime fruity scented cleansers may be appealing, but if you struggle with dry skin, toss these aside for fall, as they tend to include extra alcohol that can strip away natural skin oils that lock in hydration. Fall is the perfect time to transition to gentle, soap-free cleansing products to maintain healthy, well-hydrated skin from head to toe.

Tip 2: Exfoliate once a week
When we develop drier, more sensitive skin during the cooler weather months, it's a misconception that we should skip exfoliation. This is actually the ideal time to regularly exfoliate and help clear away the dry, dead cells that create a dull complexion. Plus, exfoliating enhances the effects of your hydrating lotions. The key is to choose more gentle exfoliants with alpha hydroxy acids that are best administered during a professional facial- instead of granular scrubs, which may irritate dry skin. You'll be rewarded with a brighter, more radiant complexion.

Tip 6: Step up your moisturizer
Cool, dry air robs skin of the natural oils that normally keep your complexion soft and supple. During fall, swap your lightweight lotions for heavier, cream-based balms that are more emollient. These bring long-lasting hydration by providing a thick barrier that reduces water loss on the surface of the skin. For the face, it's best to apply after cleansing, and for the body, after showering.
