Jon

Hi, I'm Jon Paavola, 57 and have been an active member at Razor Sharp for almost 7 years. 2010 was quite a year for me, highlighted by taking a 6 day, 55 mile wilderness hike with my sons, Ryan and Matthew, on Isle Royale last Summer. I also ran the 10 mile Lighthouse. The year ended on a surprising note though. After experiencing some chest discomfort around the first weekend in December I ended up having triple-bypass heart surgery at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee. No wonder that hike seemed like it was more challenging then it should have been!

My surgery was on Monday, December 13th lasting about 4 hours and I was discharged from the hospital the following Saturday. I have been back to a normal schedule and routine since the beginning of April with no restrictions other then maintaining a healthy 'low fat-low sodium' diet which will be with me for the duration. I've lost 15 lbs since December and my weight is back to where I want it to be. I certainly don't plan on a repeat performance.

In 2003 I took a hard look at myself and didn't like what I saw. I was overweight, smoking, eating the wrong things and certainly not exercising. I knew that I had to make some changes, so I quit smoking, went on a diet and lost 45 lbs and started exercising. In retrospect, 7 years of exercising probably just delayed the inevitable for me, as a lot of the accumulating blockage was most likely already there. My surgeon and cardiologist both mentioned that my exercising prevented this from being much more serious then it could have been and certainly reduced the severity of what I went through. I didn't have a heart attack and there was no muscle damage. Being in shape has made my recovery and rehabilitation much easier. The surgeon said that my smoking probably was the biggest negative contributor to this even though I haven't smoked in over 8 years.

For the most part I am back to doing all the things I was doing prior to surgery. I feel great and have a lot more energy. It's amazing how you feel when you have your whole heart working for you. I come to Razor Sharp 5 or 6 days a week and typically spend about 2/3rds of my time doing cardio and the remainder weight lifting. Although I have been concentrating mostly on cardio exercising since returning to the gym in March I do want to get back to lifting weights. I also want to start mixing some of the other activities Razor Sharp offers into my exercising to add some variety. So everyone keep on exercising and if anyone is curious or has any questions about what I went through I would be happy to talk to you about it.
