Member of the Month: Rich Shawhan
When Tenille asked if Rich would be interested in being the "Member of the Month" for March, I thought it would be a great idea. He has a great story to tell and I think he would be an inspiration to others. He, on the other hand, is too humble to be put in the "spotlight," so I'm just going to have to tell you about my husband.
Rich has always been an athlete. When he was young, he excelled in football, wrestling, tennis, basketball, bowling, etc. Just about anything he tried, he was good at. On May 11, 2009 his life changed in an instant. He was pitching in his 16" softball game. He went down to field a routine ground ball when all of a sudden his body went forward and his knee went backwards. I watched in the stands as he fell face-first into the dirt. It was a little embarrassing at first until he couldn't get up. Then I knew something was terribly wrong.
The ambulance came and took him to the hospital and, to make a long story short, he eventually underwent a 10-hour surgery that night to save his leg. He had dislocated his knee, torn all of the ligaments in the knee as well as the artery that runs behind it, and had totally torn away the nerve that controls lifting his foot. He was eventually transferred to Froedtert, where he spent three weeks undergoing more surgeries to try and repair the knee. I lost count of all the surgeries he has had in the past year and a half, but he finally underwent a knee replacement in October and is planning one more surgery at the end of August to try to repair the foot drop that he has.
When the "Lose to Win" challenge came out, I asked Rich if he would do it with me. He was skeptical, not wanting his handicap to hold anyone else back. After talking to Alan and a little coaxing from a fellow gym member, Rich decided to give it a try. We met with a nutritionist right before the competition started and decided we would give this our all. The first few classes I thought Rich was going to kill me! He gave me such dirty looks. He was pushed out of his comfort zone, but the results have been truly amazing! He has lost 35 pounds in six weeks! Everyone but him notices the physical changes. He even walks better than before this started. He is truly an asset to our "Lose to Win" team, and he is stronger and healthier than ever!
I'd just like to tell anyone who has doubts of their abilities and can't think they can do something, think again! Believe in yourself! I've come to see the amazing things that the body can endure. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and you WILL reach your goal. Don't ever give up on yourself! I will never give up on my husband and I'm so proud of what he has accomplished so far and know that he will see this weight loss journey through to the end!

| Acupuncture Can Help you Sleep |
| |
Sleep is a very important aspect of your health. It is the body's time to "recharge its batteries." If you have poor sleep habits you will be more likely to get sick and get stressed out. If it continues over time, poor sleep habits can lead to more serious issues.
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can have some immediate and lasting results on sleep, whether it is trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, not feeling rested upon waking, or even sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep walking etc. Just like any condition, Oriental Medicine treats the individual and the specific cause of the sleep problem or the disorder. This means that your treatment will be unique to you.
In order to determine the best treatment for you we will ask you a series of questions. Your responses combined with your pulse and tongue diagnosis will give us the information we need to diagnose the cause of your sleep issue and decide on the best possible treatment. Possible treatments include any combination of Acupuncture, accessory techniques, Tui Na massage, Chinese herbs, and nutrition. Make an appointment with
Kelly Westerlund, BS/MSOM, L.Ac today so you can start to sleep easy tonight!
