Member of the Month: Lisa Andrews
My husband and I decided after my triathlon season ended in July 2009 we would start trying to expand our family. I had trained hard through this time and had gotten into the best shape of my life. I joined the Fall into Fitness Challenge to serve as a friendly reminder to eat my fruits, vegetables, sweets in moderation, and continue my exercise routine. As a dietitian, I am a strong believer of eating in moderation and exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle. At the end of the challenge I was happy to report to Suzanne that I had gained 5 pounds because I was 10 weeks pregnant!
I continued to exercise throughout my entire pregnancy. I listened to my body every step of the way. Days I needed a break or to slow down I did. There came a point where the weights had to decrease and I found running no longer comfortable. I continued to swim, do yoga, Zumba, weight train, and walk. My son, Wesley, was born April 11, 2010 via C-section at 8 pounds 1.3 ounces and 21 inches long. I had carried my son full term! This was a blessing since my daughter was born prematurely. Before 12pm the day he was born I was up and walking around after having undergone a C-section. Not without difficulty mind you. The RN staff was amazed and said, "I have never seen a mom get up so quickly!" I was determined to help my body heal as quickly as possible and I knew the faster I was up the quicker I was going to feel better.
Wesley and I got off to a good start with breastfeeding and haven't looked back since. At my 4 week check up, I got the clearance to go back to the gym. It was a slow start but much easier than I thought. I know it was easier because I stayed active through my whole pregnancy. I am almost back to my pre-pregnancy weight (7 pounds to go). Breastfeeding, being kind to myself and exercising are all to thank for that. Beyond the weight part, I am a happy mom because I feel good about myself. Exercising gives me mental clarity, enables me to perform my job well, and be a role model for my children. My 4 year old daughter will tell you why I go to the gym five days/week. So you can be healthy Momma! I have to take good care of me to take good care of my children.
