Member of the Month: Phil Hempel
There isn't a time I can remember that I wasn't the "Big Guy" of the group; always the tallest and the biggest. Losing weight has been the constant struggle I have known all my adult life. I have tried all the fad diet plans, Weight Watchers, read books on losing weight, would lose 20 pounds then gain 30 back. It is the same situation that a lot of people go through. One year ago this month I made the decision that I would no longer allow myself to keep gaining weight, risk having health problems and leaving my family before my time. Earn the self confidence and self respect that I deserve.
My goal was to lose 100 pounds by July of this year. It wasn't easy starting out. I wanted to make sure that this wasn't a diet but a change in lifestyle. I realized that exercise and eating the right way, were going to be the key to success. There is no magic, instant way of losing weight. Hard work and dedication was the key. I started walking around the block. Then I added a 50lb backpack to my walks. I would get winded and exhausted once around the block, but it got easier and easier everyday. Soon I was walking three miles with the 40 lb backpack on. I was feeling great. A friend of mine was talking about doing the Pewaukee Triathlon, this sounded interesting to me. As I was asking him questions, a co-worker said to me "You're too fat to do a triathlon!" This was just the added motivation I needed. I never used my weight as a crutch, and I accepted his challenge.
Combined with a diet of 1,500 calories, the pounds started coming off -- 5 pounds, 10 pounds, up to 30 pounds then I hit a plateau. I kept up with my routine but couldn't lose the weight. This is when I decided that I needed to step it up a level, and I joined Razor Sharp. I got up every day at 4 am to get to the gym around 5 am. This was my new life.
Everyday that I wasn't on the road for work, I was at the club. I did swimming, treadmill, weight lifting, even a yoga class. This routine helped me lose 50 pounds! So here I am one year from when I started my new life, and 80 pounds lighter. I haven't met my goal of 100 lbs, but I still have until the end of July. I will be pushing myself to lose the last 20 pounds and meet my goal, but I consider the weight I have already lost to be a success. My triathlon is July 11th, and I will finish it.
I am thankful for the Razor staff for making my workouts enjoyable with their positive and motivating attitudes! My advice for everyone striving for weight loss is to make a goal, don't get discouraged, and find ways to keep yourself motivated!!

What's Your Metabolism REALLY Like?

Have you ever wanted to know exactly what your metabolism is? Have you always assumed yours was slow? Well, we can tell you! Here at Razor Sharp we can measure your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). This number represents the amount of calories that your body burns in one day. By knowing this number, you can then tailor your diet and exercise to help you reach your fitness goals.
Do you want to lose weight, gain weight, or just maintain? During the months of July and August, RMR tests are only $50! Don't waste another day trying to guess how many calories you should be eating. Schedule an RMR test with any of our personal trainers or Suzanne Williamson today!

Acupuncture for Digestive Problems

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can be very effective in the treatment of digestive problems. It can stop nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea almost instantly, and can also prevent future symptoms by harmonizing the "middle Jiao" (the center of the body including the digestive system and the organs and channels that are responsible for digestion.)
Digestive problems can be acute or chronic conditions. Acupuncture and herbs work very quickly with acute digestive problems like food poisoning, stomach flu, or symptoms that happen suddenly. Herbs can even be purchased that you can have on hand for future problems.
Chronic conditions take longer to treat, but the treatments should provide, at least, some relief right away, and then over time help to fix or at least manage the problem. Chronic problems are problems that have been going on for a long time, and even if you are taking medication or working with your doctor already, Oriental Medicine may be able to help with some of the symptoms or enhance your current results. Oriental Medicine has even proven effective in treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a condition that is usually linked to the emotions and is very hard to treat since the symptoms change back and forth quickly between diarrhea and constipation.
Make your appointment today and give acupuncture a try!
