June Member of the Month: Chuck Allison
Hello Razor Sharp members. I am Chuck Allison, fellow Razor Sharp
member since December 2009. My "before" bearded
picture (posted on the wall near the front desk)
captures me munching on pretzels and sprouting a
rather unsightly belly. Just beforehand, I had been
diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and weighed in at a
hefty 185 pounds, with nearly 20% body fat. At 55
years young, this was a wake up call for me to get
serious about exercise and diet.
I asked Tenille Isome, Assistant General Manager, to
be my Razor Sharp personal trainer, received terrific
nutritional counseling from Suzanne Williamson,
entered the 2010 Fitness Challenge, and set out to
get fit! Well, I suspect many of you can boast better
results, but I am extremely grateful to report that all my
numbers have gone in the right direction! My
diabetes "A1C" improved by 9 points allowing me to
cut my medication in half. I am 20 pounds lighter with
an "excellent" body fat measurement of 15.5%. These
are record results for me. I give much credit to
Tenille's weight training expertise alongside
Suzanne's nutritional counseling. Furthermore, let
me thank the many friendly members I see working
out. You are all an inspiration to me.
Congratulations to us all for investing in our
respective health!
Let me close by saying how much I appreciate all the
fine staff at Razor Sharp Fitness!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! |
|
A big THANK-YOU to all of you who donated to the food drive for the Salvation Army of Racine, and the Tex Reynolds Toys For Tots program. Because of your continued kindness and generosity, those less fortunate will benefit!!
Now, we have an even larger request. The Blood Center of Wisconsin needs you to donate your blood on June 14th here at the club. The BCW has less than a one day supply of O Negative blood and your help is needed IMMEDIATELY. O Negative blood is so important because it is in every emergency room and on emergency transport vehicles like Flight for Life. It could be the difference between life and death in a serious emergency.
Of course, the BCW will take all blood type donations. Signing up is easy as 1, 2, 3. Just click on the link and register.
www.bcw.edu/razorsharpfit.com
You may also stop at the front desk to register. And walk-ins are ALWAYS welcome. Our goal is 35 donors, so let's make it happen.
My hours for the summer are changing as I pursue teaching at GTC. My binder at the front desk has my hours posted. I will continue to provide limited services like cholesterol screens, nutrition consults and the Transitions Lifestyle Program. You may also leave me a phone or email message at any time. You have all been wonderful, and I encourage you to continue your journey to health and wellness!

Deborah Kohn is a 2001 graduate of the Chicago
School of Massage Therapy and is Nationally and
Wisconsin State Certified. Deb applies a therapeutic
approach in chronic pain management, performance,
myofascial release, and deep tissue massage while

inconvenience anyone. We will not, however, be
changing the prices of the 30 or 90-minute
massages. We greatly appreciate your business and
thank you for your continued loyalty.

Nutrition the Chinese Medicine Way: It's easier to prevent illness than to reverse it |
|
As we leave spring and move into the summer
season, it's time to enjoy barbecues, picnics, and spend time outdoors, many times eating lots of food
on the run. The following are some suggested foods
to keep you healthy throughout this season of outdoor
living.
During this late spring season eat bitter foods such as dandelion greens, watercress or kale. To prepare, gently saut them in olive oil until they begin to break down. Sprinkle in some balsamic vinegar and you have a meal that is low in calories and excellent for clearing out the heat and damp that you've built up over the long winter.
Other foods that are abundant in late spring are asparagus, avocado, bananas, chives, cucumber, lettuce, mangos, onion, peas, raspberries, rhubarb, spinach, spring onions, and strawberries. (Many of these are not local.)
For the summer season watermelon is an ideal food for clearing heat and for cooling you off - 1 cup is only 46 calories. Use it to replace ice cream to refresh you after a meal or as a snack.
If you are susceptible to sinus problems or lung disorders eat mostly cooked foods. They are easier on the digestive system and they do not contribute to your existing damp problem. If stress is your main problem, eat whole oats and celery, both will help to calm you. Some more suggestions:
- Oatmeal for breakfast and celery to snack on throughout the day will help to lower your blood pressure and help to release stress.
- Strawberries, string beans or radishes will help to relieve summer phlegm and may help to relieve some of the symptoms of allergies.
- Blueberries will help to give you energy and they help to keep you young.
- Eat mushrooms and carrots to reduce a red face caused by anger or other emotions.
- For upset stomachs use Cilantro and Ginger. They both aid digestion.
For the best nutrition available eat foods that are in season and that are available locally. Here in Racine there is a Farmer's Market at Elmwood Plaza on Tuesday & Friday; Downtown on State Street on Saturday morning; and in West Racine on Wednesday. All are held from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. Sturtevant's Farmer's Market is at 8505 Durand Avenue on Mondays.
To discuss the foods that would best help you to maintain health, or to help with an existing problem call and make an appointment with either Juanita or Kelly, we can both assist you with foods that are right for your physical condition.

Heather Lojeski is the 2010 Racine Dream Team Makeover Winner |
|
Heather just recently celebrated her 40th birthday and has 10 children ranging from age 4 to 20. She home-schools her children and also is currently the director of the Royal Friends Clubs of Racine which is an organization for mentoring abused and neglected children ages 7 to 11. Her husband had to take a significant pay cut after leaving Snap-On Tools in 1999. Now, he found out recently that he is laid off temporarily from his new company. This is obviously a severe financial hardship for a family with so many children. In addition, Heather is dealing with ongoing struggles as a result of childhood abuse, which is why she is so committed to helping other children who are facing similar issues.
She is looking for a "New Beginning" so that she can become stronger emotionally as well as physically more healthy in order to give even more back to the community. Heather will be working out hard during her 4 month journey, here at Razor Sharp Fitness. She will be training with Tenille Isome and receiving nutritional counseling from Suzanne Williamson. Congratulations and good luck to Heather as she embarks on her "New Beginning"!!!
