Halfway There
Dan Deleon

This month's featured member is Dan De Leon. He has been a member of Razor Sharp for only six months, but has accomplished a great deal thus far. To date, Dan has lost an amazing 40 lbs! His goal is to lose 80, and in only six months he has hit the halfway mark.

When I asked Dan what made him decide to join and tackle his weight loss goal he said, "well, when I was 24 I became a father and quit working out. Now that I'm 30 I figured that it was time that I did something about it." Now that he's lost 40 lbs., Dan says that he has a lot more energy and it's easier to play with his daughter. "I coach my daughter's (now 5 years old) soccer team, and after they saw me throwing her up in the air they wanted me to throw them up too! It's exhausting and I wouldn't have been able to do that before I lost the weight," said Dan.

So you're probably wondering how he did it, right? Well, Dan explained that from January until May he only lost 13 lbs. He was inconsistent with his training and wasn't sure if he was doing the right things. In May however, he starting working out with personal trainer Bridget Durocher consistently and in the last two months he has now dropped 25lbs.!

"Bridget helped me work on my endurance and progressively I was able to do more and more," comments Dan. Between strength training with Bridget twice a week, lifting on his own twice a week and running six days a week, Dan can now run on the treadmill for an hour (he started with five minutes)!

After talking to him for a bit, I asked what it was that motivated him to keep coming in to the club. He said that a lot of it is not wanting to disappoint Bridget, but the other part of it is also his competitiveness with himself. He says, "I bring out the 'Anything I can do, I can do better' mentality."

Excellent job Dan and on behalf of the staff here at Razor Sharp we wish you the best of luck in reaching that 80lb. weight loss goal. I have no doubt that you will be successful in your quest!

  • A Closer Look at Low GI Diets
  • eat

There have been several recent studies demonstrating that a low-glycemic load diet may help individuals achieve weight loss comparable to a low- fat diet. By comparison, a low-glycemic load diet appears to have a more significant affect on promoting cardiovascular health, and helping the body to maintain low cholesterol and normal blood sugar levels.

The scientific data is even more compelling for low GI diets when each food that is consumed falls within the low-GI category of 55 or less. Also, low-GI diets are best implemented when they are not calorie restricted. A non-caloric-restricted diet that is low-GI may help support even greater cardiovascular protection and body fat loss. When a low-GI diet is combined with lifestyle changes such as exercise and stress reduction, you will probably have the best possible outcome.
