Making Fitness a Priority
Jenny

Our member of the month for June is Jenny Brasfield. Jenny has been a member of Razor Sharp for over 5 years, and over the course of those 5 years she has been quite consistent and dedicated to her fitness regime. She particularly enjoys the classes that Razor Sharp has, as she either attends or has attended almost every one!

As for what it is specifically that she likes about the classes, she said that aside from the obvious variety, she thinks they are very motivational and supportive. "Most people think that when they go into a class for the first time, that it's going to be intimidating. It's not like that here. Everyone is supportive of each other and we genuinely want to see each other do well," Jenny says. She went on to say that even when she doesn't feel like working out, that camaraderie is what ultimately gets her to go!

When I asked Jenny what motivates her to stay in shape and make fitness a priority she said that it's definitely her family's health history. "I think we all look at our parents and their health problems, whether it be diabetes or high blood pressure or something else, and we should try to avoid those things. Prevention is the key," comments Jenny.

Finally, as we were wrapping up our conversation, I questioned Jenny as whether or not there was anything else that motivated her to exercise and she jokingly said "Of course! I like to eat!"

Amen to that! Great job and keep up the hard work!

Greetings!

Hello and welcome to the June issue of the Razor Sharp Newsletter. One year ago. in June of 2008, we tragically lost one of our Razor Sharp family members, lifeguard Dan Conner.

To celebrate his life, and to support a scholarship fund that has been established in his name, there will be a benefit held in his honor on Saturday, June 27th from 10:00am to 10:00pm (rain or shine) at Johnson's Park. A cost of $10 includes food and live music entertainment. We hope to see you there!

  • Acupuncture for Sports Injuries
  • Acupuncture has been used for centuries by martial artists to treat their injuries and shorten their healing time; this tradition continues today with the treatment of sports injury.

Sports injury covers all acute injuries and chronic ailments due to specific physical activity such as: physical fitness or training, competitive sports, martial arts, outdoor activity, etc. It usually involves stress or damage to muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints.

Acupuncture can reduce pain, increase ROM (range of motion), speed up recovery time, and strengthen weakened areas of the body. Acupuncture reduces inflammation, swelling, and bruising, relaxes muscles, and improves blood circulation to the area.

  • Pedaling for success
  • bike2

Think about the best cyclists you have seen on TV or in races. What do they all have in common? They all have a nice fluid, efficient pedaling technique. Working on this one item can make you a better cyclist and increase your enjoyment in cycling. Two techniques to improve your cycling skills are pedaling in circles and finding your optimal pedal cadence.

Pedaling in circles means providing uniform pressure to the cranks throughout the pedal cycle. Many beginning cyclist tend to just push down on the pedals (mashing). This technique mainly uses the quadriceps muscle to push down and the rider does not produce power at the top and the bottom of the pedal stroke. Also, by utilizing just one muscle group, it will fatigue faster, keeping you from your optimal speed. By pedaling in circles, you utilize more of your leg muscles, therefore sharing the load. You will also be producing power throughout the pedal stroke.
