Quick Security Tip for Collectors |
Burglar alarms are good, but many people fail to actually use them. Who hasn't left their house and forgotten to set their alarm? (Or maybe your kids or your dog walker left without setting the system.)
Collectors should consider arming individual objects with motion-sensor alarm systems, so that they will be protected even if doorways and windows are accidentally left unarmed. This back-up system especially makes sense when just a few items make up a large portion of a collection's value.

Photo Shoot Wrecked $300,000 Sculpture, Collector Alleges |
A magazine was blamed in a lawsuit for shattering a 2,630-year-old Nigerian terracotta sculpture during a photo shoot last May at a Manhattan collector's residence.
The piece was appraised after the accident at $300,000. The collector did not have enough insurance to cover the sculpture's full value.

If you are going to open your gallery or home to a photo or film shoot, you need to understand the insurance implications. Typical photographer's and videographer's insurance policies exclude coverage for fine art at shoot locations. You may want to request that the photographer/ videographer purchase special coverage for your artworks.

National Hurricane Center Says Don't Tape your Windows
In a challenge to conventional wisdom, National Hurricane Center officials are encouraging residents to skip taping their windows when a hurricane is heading their way. They believe it leads to a false sense of security and actually increases danger. Taping windows can create larger and deadlier shards of glass when winds blow through a home.
Instead, NHC says residents should use proven methods such as hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows.

Independent Contractor or Employee?
One of the toughest questions for our clients is often determining whether a worker should be classified as an employee or independent contractor for Workers Compensation Insurance. The short answer is that when in doubt, consult a labor attorney. But Best's Review magazine recently ran an article that at least helps with understanding the issues involved in this determination.
According to the article, the most important factor is whether the company has the right to control the manner and means by which the worker accomplishes the desired result. In other words, does the worker manage their own work process.
Secondary factors include:
- Whether the worker is engaged in a distinct occupation or an independently established business.
- Whether the worker or the company supplies the tools or instrumentalities used in the work.
- Method of payment, whether by time or by job.
- Whether the work is part of the regular business of the company.
- Whether the worker has a substantial investment in the business.
- Whether the worker hires employees to assist him or her.
