Indiana Theatre Building Smashed by Car

Smashed TruckIn February a driver crashed her car through the wall of a theatre in Richmond, Indiana. The accident occurred just two and a half hours before a performance was scheduled to start. Luckily no one was injured in the accident. An old radiator pipe caught under the car and stopped it from travelling too far into the building itself.

There was no structural damage because the exterior wall that was hit contained mostly glass. But it took about three weeks to replace the window wall because the materials had to be custom ordered to the theatre's specific size. More restoration work must be done inside, including installing new carpet and new wall coverings to replace those that were damaged.

Payment for all of the repairs is being negotiated between the driver's insurance company and the theatre's insurance company.

This is just another example of how difficult it is to predict the types of accidents that can impact a theatre--no pun intended.

Shakespeare Festival Collects $2.6 million from Insurers

This is a follow-up to a story that we originally reported in the fall ofWilliam Shakespeare 2011. An Oregon Shakespeare festival was forced to relocate when a cracked beam closed its performance venue. The festival recently received more than $2.6 million in insurance payouts for lost revenue sustained during last season's six-week closure of its theatre building.

The festival received approximately $300,000 for the cost of fixing the venue's beam, and another $2.3 million to cover lost revenue associated with the closure. The theater company is still negotiating for about $900,000 as reimbursement for costs sustained by the festival to move 31 performances to other venues.

Air Conditioning Units Vandalized at Upstate New York Theatre

Last month a theatre building near Buffalo, New York was hit by thieves looking for scrap metal. Four rooftop air conditioning units were vandalized and stripped of copper by the thieves. The units, which were installed just five years ago, were paid for through fundraising and a grant. The theatre's executive director estimates the cost at $15,000 to replace the units.

With a $5,000 deductible on their insurance and depreciation of the five-year-old units, plus installation costs, he estimates that the theatre needs to raise $10,000 in order to replace the units. The theatre continues to have heat, but officials hope to replace the air conditioning units by May, so the theater can operate during the summer.

-Buffalo News, February 24, 2012

This article demonstrates the importance of understanding the details of your insurance policy. A higher deductible saves money on premiums, but will you have adequate cash available to cover it when an emergency happens? Do you know the difference between Replacement Cost and Actual Cash Value? If this theatre had Replacement Cost coverage, they would not have to worry about the value of the air conditioning units being depreciated for age.

Chicago Area Leads Nation in Copper Thefts

Speaking of copper, the Chicago Tribune reports that the Chicago area leadsLincoln Penny the nation in insurance claims related to thefts of copper and other metals. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the Chicago area had 42 more claims than were generated in the New York and northern New Jersey region, which ranked No. 2.

From Jan. 1, 2009, through 2011 claims were up 81% nationwide. The increase was driven by rising prices for metals, especially copper. And not only is the frequency of thefts increasing, but thieves also are becoming more brazen. A recent theft of copper wiring at an airport in Modesto, California, for example, blacked out runway approach lights.
