Wedding Photographer Sued Six Years after the Event

A groom, disappointed with his wedding photos, decided to sue theOld Camera photographers claiming that they had missed the last dance and the bouquet toss. But what is striking about this suit is that the wedding took place in 2003 and the groom waited six years to sue. And not only has the groom demanded to be repaid the $4,100 cost of the photography, he also wants $48,000 to recreate the entire wedding and fly the principals to New York so the celebration can be re-shot by another photographer. Re-enacting the wedding may pose a particular challenge because the couple divorced and the bride is believed to have moved back to her native Latvia.

In his lawsuit, he also complained that the photographs were "unacceptable as to color, lighting, poses, positioning" and that a video, which he had expected to record the wedding's six hours, was only two hours long.

The photographer studio claims that it has already spent $50,000 in defense costs.

Our Continuing Series: Unpredictable Business Lawsuits

A Maryland man who was charged $1 more for a manicure thanNail Polish women has filed a lawsuit for $200,000 claiming sex discrimination. The man claims that he was humiliated when charged the extra dollar after. He stated, "I feel I'm being discriminated against based on my gender. There's nothing to say my hands or my nails are any different than a woman's nails."

A New Jersey police officer who discovered body hair in his egg sandwich last year is suing the restaurant and the former cook who admitted to doctoring the food. According to the lawsuit, the restaurant failed in their obligation to keep the store in a safe condition and to protect their customers from harm when the officer was served a sandwich "adulterated with pubic, chest or other human hair." The officer had to undergo testing at a hospital after the incident and is now frequently reminded by others about it.

-Courier Post Online, October 26, 2011

In a similar suit, a Hawaii-based soldier who says he swallowed needles that were hidden in a Burger King hamburger is suing the fast food chain. The soldier claims that one needle pierced his tongue and he was hospitalized for six days after another needle was found in his small intestine.

-Associated Press, October 21, 2011

Tony Chachere's Creole Foods has filed a lawsuit against Big Easy Foods of Louisiana, LLC, alleging that Big Easy has infringed on Chachere's trademarks by selling frozen food in nearly identical packaging. The suit claims that items such as frozen shrimp are packaged with fonts, bold colors and banners "confusingly similar" to Chachere's brand. The suit is complicated by the fact that the smaller Big Easy was at one point a licensee of Chachere's.

Remember that you don't have to lose a lawsuit to lose money. Legal costs can be significant even for successfully defended cases. Insurance can help cover legal defense costs.

A Dog is Not an Arsonist's Best Friend

According to Best Review, an insurance industry magazine, dogs are being trained to help fire investigators find accelerant residue (think gasoline) at fire scenes. This is a big deal since arson is the cause of 25% of US fires.

Labrador retrievers are typically used as arson dogs because of their tracking ability, ease of training, sociability and strong work ethic. The dogs are also used in outreach programs focused on fire prevention.
