Hard Times Make for Good Market in Corporate Memorabilia
The initial wave of enthusiasm for products bearing the Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Bear Stearns insignia may have died down considerably as collectors have grown weary of the economic downturn. But there's still a lot of interest in iconic successful American brands like John Deere, Budweiser, Ford, Coca-Cola and AT&T.
These brands are nostalgic and remind collectors of better economic times. Airline memorabilia, antique stock certificates and vintage ads have also remained popular.
Enron is probably the exception that makes the rule relative to collector fatique with failed brands. Memorabilia from Enron, the largest collapse in US corporate history, remains popular. The Smithsonian Institution even procured an Enron coffee mug for the National Museum of American History in an effort to document the historic scandal.

(I learned a new term from this article. Scripophily is the hobby of collecting and studying antique stock and bond certificates.) |

Art Fair Shipping Tips from AXA
AXA Art Insurance is a big sponsor of international art fairs. The insurer reminds us that while the hurried pace of events at fairs may result in overbooked schedules, it should not result in the relaxation of best business practices, especially in the area of packing and shipping artwork.
Before deciding how to ship artworks, a few preliminary questions should be answered in advance:
- How fragile is the work and how will it be handled in transit?
- Who will supervise the loading of the work?
- Will you or the person receiving the work provide packaging?
- What are the appropriate packing materials? This is often determined by the surface of object to be shipped or the duration of the shipping.
- What is the planned method of shipping? Commercial transport by cargo van or air transport?
When shipping to a trade show or art fair, it is imperative to clearly label items and include the exhibitor's booth number and contact details of the sender and recipient. The following is a checklist for labeling:
- Write your name on the exterior sides of all shipping containers using permanent marker.
- Cover any paper labels with clear tape.
- Identify your containers as "Fragile" (your shipping company can supply "Fragile" stickers).
- Identify where you would like the container to be opened by writing "Open This Side" or "Open Here".
- Include packing and unpacking instructions.
When choosing a shipper it is important to remember that you often get what you pay for. It is advisable to choose a fine arts shipper with a solid reputation and experience with a variety of artwork. If you choose a shipper based on cost alone you may be disappointed by the results.

Jewelry Theft Jumps After Holidays
According to the Chubb Insurance, jewelry claims are 15 percent higher in December and January than at any other time of the year. (Claims are 8 percent higher than in February, despite the popularity of jewelry as Valentine's Day gifts.) Nothing can ruin your holiday memories faster than realizing that a new piece of jewelry is missing.
In the first flush of sentimental joy, could there be anything less romantic than asking how much a ring cost? But if that ring is nice enough to make you tear up, it probably should be insured. Tell the gift giver that you appreciate their gift so much that you want to be certain that it is properly insured.
