Justin Timberlake Injury Forces Movie Shutdown

I'm often asked by filmmakers about 'Cast Coverage'. Here's an example from Hollywood of exactly what this coverage is for.

After Justin Timberlake suffered a leg injury shooting his new filmJustin Timberlake "Now", the studio temporarily shut down production. A set insider told E! News that the shutdown would last about two weeks in all. Timberlake will not return to the set of Andrew Niccol's thriller until he is off crutches.

-E! On-line, December 6, 2010

You can imagine the costs involved with delaying a major film production for two weeks. Assuming that the production company had 'Cast Coverage', they would have been compensated by the insurance company for at least some of these costs.

Cast Coverage claims are paid to the production company, and not to the individual cast member as is a common misconception. Workers Comp is the type of insurance that makes payments to cast and crew members for injuries suffered on the set.

Insurance Can Affect Casting Decisions

The production team behind "Inferno," a biopic of tragic '70s porn star Linda Lovelace, recently announced they had replaced their original star, Lindsay Lohan. For months, director Matthew Wilder touted the dynamic comeback performance the troubled starlet would unleash; this week he replaced her because of "the impossibility of insuring" Lohan.

The off-screen woes of an actor can drive up the price of the insurance policies that producers need to take out on their talent before they start rolling the cameras. These policies insure the risk that the talent will not show when shooting starts.  (This is another issue relating to Cast Coverage that was discussed above.) Underwriters at insurance companies watch and read TMZ and Deadline Hollywood--they are aware of industry gossip.

Other examples include reports that Robert Downey Jr. was only able to get a role in "The Singing Detective" because co-star and pal Mel Gibson put up his own money as bond.  Nicole Kidman was reportedly forced to drop out of "Panic Room" after a knee injury that shut down production of "Moulin Rouge" made Panic Room's insurers wary of her.
