Van of Band Vandalized in Chicago

REEL Chicago reported that thieves broke into the van of an emerging indie-pop band from L.A. while the group was taping an in-studio performance in Chicago. The band, Saint Motel , lost an electric bass, an acoustic guitar, iPods, and a laptop.

During daylight hours the thieves simply smashed one of the van's windows.

Property left in cars and other vehicles makes easy targets for thieves. Try to not to leave cameras and other valuable equipment in unattended vehicles.

Collector Car Theft Ring Sentenced

The leader of a collector car theft ring was recently sentenced in Denver to nine years in prison and was ordered to pay $1,167,211.68 in restitution. Members of the group would rent an expensive car, report it stolen, change the VIN, then sell it to another accomplice. The accomplice would insure the car and report it as stolen again to get the insurance money.

  Classic Car

One of the stolen cars once belonged to Steve McQueen - a 1959 Cadillac convertible valued at $133,320.00 - and was featured in the MacGyver TV series. The estimated loss to individuals, insurance companies and car rental agencies was $950,000.

The use of valuable vehicles during a shoot requires a security plan. In addition to increasing your future insurance costs, the loss of a vehicle can delay production.

Famous (or infamous) Film Insurance Incidents

Here are some film insurance stories from various sources:

The final scene of the 1981 James Caan film "Thief" included a house exploding in a real suburban neighborhood. To accomplish this, a fake house was built in front of a real house. Unfortunately, sparks from the fake house explosion ignited the house behind, burning it to the ground. Insurance wound up paying $900,000 in damages.

When the Iowa cornfield central to the plot of the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams" was threatened by a drought, insurers paid $200,000 to install an irrigation system in the field.

In the Martin Scorsese-Leonardo Di Caprio 2004 film "The Aviator", an airstrip used for some of the film's scenes was destroyed by wildfires. The insurance company not only paid for damaged equipment, they paid for the production downtime needed to find another airstrip that reflected the film's time period.

Insurance companies have had to pay to complete films disrupted by the deaths of stars in mid-production. Examples include comedian John Candy's death during the filming of "Wagons East", actor Oliver Reed's death while making "Gladiator", and the death of star Brandon Lee during the making of "The Crow." And of course more recently we had the death of Heath Ledger during the filming of "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus".

Risks to Consider for International Locations

Aon, one of the world's largest insurance brokers, has provided a list of risks to consider when scouting for international locations:

  • Crime: including theft, robbery, street crime and assault.
  • Organized Crime and Corruption: reflecting the likelihood that business will be affected by bribery, extortion or threats from organized crime elements or government corruption. Globe
  • Kidnap and Ransom: identifying the kidnap and ransom risk participants in filmmaking may encounter.
  • Disease Risk: reflecting the prevalence and need for vaccination for epidemic, communicable and/or tropical diseases.
  • Medical Care: measuring the extent to which medical care is available and meets modern standards.

Of course these risks have to be balanced against other factors including desirable climate, scenery and tax breaks.

Start the New Year with Home Fire Safety

Chubb Personal Insurance reminds us that structure fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters combined. Here are some come sense safety tips from Chubb:

Fire Extinguisher1.       Purchase Fire Extinguishers

There should at least be one fire extinguisher in the kitchen, in any room that has a wood-burning stove or fireplace, in the workshop and the garage. Every six months, check that the pressure indicators are still firmly seated in the green area.

2.       Understand Your 9-1-1

An increasing number of 9-1-1 calls are being made either from cell phones or from broadband home phones. The 9-1-1 service works differently in both these situations, and it is important to understand the difference. An emergency call from a cell or broadband phone is typically routed to a dispatcher in a distant place. He or she may be unable to pinpoint your location, so you must clearly communicate the city you are calling from, your exact address and the type of emergency.

3.       Maintain Your Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors should be installed on each level of your home and within 15 feet of all sleeping areas. If you opt for battery-operated smoke detectors, test them every few months and replace the batteries at least twice a year.

4.       Keep Warm Safely

Furnaces should be professionally cleaned and inspected prior to each heating season.

5.       Prevent the Shock of Your Life

If you need more plugs in one location than can be accommodated by the electric outlet, purchase UL-rated power strips or surge protectors instead. Never run electrical cords or extension cords under carpeting or connect two or three of them to each other.

6.       Keep the Grill Where It Belongs

Never use an outdoor cooking device inside. Do not use outdoor cooking devices on the porch since the flames of a grease fire can easily reach the porch ceiling.

7.       Plan for Wildfires

If you live in a wildfire-prone area, clear dead limbs from trees and brush from the ground prior to wildfire season to help create a "clear space" around your home.
