| Help Your Landscaping Survive the Summer Heat
What can you do to keep your garden looking fresh and attractive during the hot summer season? Here are a few helpful tips: Keep deadheading spent flowers to encourage a second round of blooming. For Yarrow, Phlox, Veronica, Coreopsis, Catmint and Bellflower, you can cut the stalks back by about a third to stimulate fresh foliage and blooming.
Cut back annuals and perennials when they begin to look tattered. Spent blooms can be cut off, and brown leaves can be trimmed back.
Now through September is the ideal time for lawn seeding. Make sure there is good seed to soil contact to assure good results. Water newly seeded areas often to prevent drought stress.
Keep plants watered consistently during the heat of summer. A good deep watering once a week helps the plant develop a deep root system and provides a good reservoir of water from which to draw.
Keep weeds under control. Removing weeds from your garden will make an immediate impact and your plants will grow better without the competition from weeds for water and nutrients.

Seasonal Color: Perk Up Your Landscaping!
As the weather begins to turn cooler, your once colorful perennials and annuals will fade and lose their summer glory. Your container plantings will also begin to look less attractive. How can you perk up your landscaping for the fall? Colorful mums and cool weather plantings! Chrysanthemums are the traditional fall flower. These hardy plants come in many different colors and can be planted just about any time -- just be sure to mulch them! There are also many new and improved pansies available now. Some can be planted in the fall. They will bloom in the fall and then most will survive the winter and come back to bloom the next spring. RYCO can help you bring color to your landscaping by suggesting Spring bulb and plant combinations, planting your container gardens with pansies, mums and winter greens, planting new perennials, shrubs and trees during the cool fall weather, and helping you to maintain a colorful and attractive landscape for months to come. THIS MONTH'S QUESTION: Even though temperatures are hot, we've had a lot of rain this year. Does it make any sense to install a rain barrel now?
- Catherine M., Inverness ANSWER: Given all the rain we have had this summer, it's not hard to imagine all the benefits of installing a rain barrel. When it rains, water is directed from your downspout into the rain barrel. Suddenly you have a great source of water for use in the garden during dry periods - and using it will not increase your water bill. It's also important to give your plants, shrubs and trees a good watering before winter so installing a rain barrel now makes very good sense! Let us know if you have more questioms or if we can provide help. |
| MONTHLY TO-DO LIST
Overseed or plant a new lawn while the soil is warm and seeds will germinate rapidly.
Fertilize your lawn. If conditions are dry, water the lawn to assure active growth.
Keep watering! Plants need about one inch of water per week.
Inspect your mulch to see if it is still intact or if it has decayed down to less than a 2-3 inch layer.
Do not apply rose fertilizer after mid-August, as this will encourage new growth that will be susceptible to winter damage.
