Did You Know...

Autumn officially begins on September 23?

A  Christmas cactus needs 14 hours of uninterrupted darkness for six weeks (starting now) in order for it to bloom?

Multicolored Asian Lady Beetles that start to enter homes in September will stain surfaces if crushed? Vacuum them up instead and discard the bag.

Houseplants kept outside for the summer should be isolated from other houseplants for 2-3 weeks after bringing indoors to avoid transfer of disease and insects?

Spring flowering bulbs (hardy bulbs) such as tulips, daffodils and crocus need a cold period during the winter to flower? These bulbs should be planted in the fall to develop a root system and bloom in the spring.

Now Is the Time...

to Mulch New Plantings
Fall is the ideal time to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. Not only do many nurseries have end-of-season sales on plant material, but fall's cool weather is less stressful on the plants. WHEN YOU PLANT, DON'T FORGET TO MULCH TO KEEP IN MOISTURE AND PROTECT YOUNG ROOT SYSTEMS.

Add Fall Color to Your Landscape
Mum VarietiesFor fall flower power, mum's the word! Chrysanthemums have long been regarded as the flower for late season color.

Chrysanthemums (or mums for short) come in a beautiful variety of colors, including white, off-white, yellow, gold, bronze, red, burgundy, pink, lavender and purple. The flower types are equally as diverse from daisy, anemone, semi-double, buttons, pompoms and double. They range in size from a dainty 1 ½ inch diameter to 4 inches in diameter for dramatic impact.

Fall PlantingsMix them with other popular fall selections such sedums, asters, flowering kale and pansies for a gorgeous display of color and texture. Plant them in the ground to replace fading annuals and perennials, as well as refresh your flower pots and window boxes.

Repairing Pavers Now May Save You Money in the Long Run
Rain BarrelHave you noticed cracked, uneven or sunken areas of your paver patio, walkways or driveway? These problems can be serious trip hazards for anyone visiting your property. As we move into the fall and winter months, water, snow and ice will tend to collect in these areas. Not only does that make it more hazardous to walk on these surfaces, but the freezing and thawing that will occur through next spring can make the damage to your beautiful pavers even worse.

Shape Up Your Lawn in Three Steps
  1. Get a Healthier Lawn this SpringFertilize in early September. This is the most important application of the year. This application will provide stronger and healthier growth next spring. Control broadleaf weeds such as dandelion, clover and plantain. In the fall, broadleaf weeds store energy reserves in their roots for the winter. Herbicides enter the weed and travel to the roots with the food reserves to completely kill the weed. Be sure to spray on a calm day and follow all label directions.
  2. This is the best time of year to reseed bare or thin areas that have been worn from summer play, traffic or construction. Consider renting a slit seeder to get seed down into the soil of existing lawns.
  3.  Core aerate your lawn to reduce thatch (if more than one half inch) and compacted soil. Overseed or fertilize after core aeration.
How Do Your Know If Your Lawn Needs Aeration?
If your lawn shows considerable foot wear, drains slowly, or browns up quickly when dry, the soil is probably compacted. Thatch is the organic layer of material that wedges between your grass and the soil. If it gets thicker than ½" to ¾" it could lead to moisture starvation, foster insect growth, and festering lawn disease. In both cases, your lawn is most likely a strong candidate for aeration.

If you're not a do-it-yourselfer, RYCO can help. Our Fall 3-Step Program starts at just $35.00 per application for an average sized turf (4,000 sq. ft.) Call Pat at 1-800-955-RYCO,  extension 19 to schedule service.
