Favorite Winter Running Routes - and Why
The main thing to remember about winter running - beyond the need for layering and proper apparel - is that you can enjoy yourself a lot more if you properly plan your route.  There is no need to continually pound out the miles on the treadmill.  There are some places that offer some solitude and a respite from your worst enemy - the wind and the ice.

Generally, Sharon Woods Metro Park in Westerville is one of the first parks around Columbus to get plowed.  And for some peace away from what can sometimes be noisy traffic from the Interstate, the inner loops are good to run in light snow.  Highbanks, located north on Highway 23, is another park that offers some scenic beauty at all times - but particularly in the winter.  A lot of times you will need a traction device like Yaktrax, as most of the trails there are unplowable.  But Highbanks offers excellent wind protection.  And the Olentangy Trail sits in enough of a valley to provide some wind protection - and the stretch in Worthington usually sees the plow first.

Regardless of where you run in the winter - if it is slippery you can shorten your stride for traction.  There will be a tendency to quicken your cadence, but try not to do this.  Just be glad you are outside, even if it means slowing by 30 seconds per mile.  And route plan for the wind.  For a circuitous route, run into the wind first and then with it during the back half of your run.  Overall you will stay more comfortable this way.
