Midwest Evaluation of the Adult Functioning of Former Foster Youth: Outcomes at Age 26

The Midwest Evaluation of the Adult Functioning of Former Foster Youth (Midwest Study) is a longitudinal study following a sample of young people from Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois as they transition out of foster care into adulthood. It provides a comprehensive picture of how foster youth are faring during this transition since the Foster Care Independence Act of 1999 became law. Although the results of this study indicate that young people who have aged out of foster care are faring poorly as a group relative to their peers, the data also suggests that extending foster care to age 21 may be associated with better outcomes in some domains.

Child and Family Policy Forum Webcast is Now Online - Public Systems: Responding to Students Affected by Trauma
Children and youth who experience trauma such as maltreatment are often involved with multiple systems in the public sector, including foster care, education, and juvenile justice. Effective interventions for this vulnerable population require a perspective that is grounded in the understanding of trauma and its effects; comprehensive information about the medical, social, developmental, mental health, and educational status of the child and the adults who figure prominently in the child's life; and collaboration across public systems.
