March 12, 2009 Audio Recording: Children, Families, and Foreclosures
The March 12 Thursday's Child explored how the foreclosure crisis is affecting families  and emerging strategies for stabilizing neighborhoods hit hard by the housing market collapse. Chapin Hall Research Fellow Malcolm Bush was among the experts discussing the scope of the housing crisis, its effect on families and communities, how the new policies play out locally, and the research needed to understand families' situations moving forward.

April 16, 2009 Audio Recording: Kids, Families, and Tax Policy
The April16 Thursday's Child public policy forum examined the opportunities and challenges of using the tax code to aid children and families. Panelists discussed why tax policy has become a powerful partner to government spending over the past two decades and the tax provisions focused on children and families in the recent economic stimulus package and in the President's proposed fiscal 2010 budget. They also discussed tax policies now being considered by governors and state legislatures.

Chapin Hall Study Explores Experiences of Youthful Offenders Reentering Their Communities
This Chapin Hall report describes the extent of system involvement among Illinois youth released from correctional facilities, tracking a population of youth under age 18 in Illinois following their release. Using administrative records, researchers develop profiles of reentry experiences across the many systems that serve youth and their families. Researchers examined their involvement with school, public assistance, foster care, and government-assisted services for health, mental health, and substance abuse needs. Because involvement in multiple services as part of the reentry experience  is likely to impact the chances of reoffending, this body of information will be valuable to policymakers, practitioners, teachers and social service providers.

Report Analyzes Costs and Benefits for Anchor Institutions' Engagement with Their Communities
In this Chapin Hall report, researchers present findings on the role that anchor institutions--major nonprofit institutions such as universities and hospitals--can play in promoting the revitalization of economically challenged cities and neighborhoods. The report focuses on the value of community investments for the institution itself and provides guidance to decision makers within anchor institutions who are contemplating prospects and avenues for investment in their local city or community.
