Forum and Webcast: Children,
Families, and Foreclosures: The Economic Crisis Hits Home
Join Chapin Hall and the Urban Institute on
March 12 for a Thursday's Child public policy forum to discuss the
little-explored terrain of how the foreclosure crisis is affecting families,
and emerging strategies for stabilizing neighborhoods hit hard by the housing market
collapse. Chapin Hall research fellow Malcolm Bush will be among the experts discussing the scope of
the crisis, its effect on families and communities, how the new policies will play out locally, and the research needed to
understand families' situations moving forward.

Audio Recording: Children, the Recession, and the
Economic Recovery Plan
This Thursday's Child forum explored how children and
adolescents will fare under the federal economic recovery package and what it will take to implement provisions for young people successfully.
Matthew Stagner, Chapin Hall's executive director, joined a panel of experts who discussed
the long-term impact that periods of economic downturn have on children; what federal, state, and local officials must do to speedily implement the recovery package and coordinate programs effectively; and barriers and opportunities presented by elements of the package
intended to help children and
families in need.

Evaluation Shows
Afterschool Quality Improvement System Progressing
Successfully
|
 |
 |
This is the fourth report of a process evaluation of Prime Time,
Inc., an intermediary organization working to implement a system of continuous
quality improvement for afterschool programs in Palm Beach County, Florida. Prime Time facilitates a range of supports,
including professional development, onsite technical assistance, peer coaching,
networking, and curricular resources. Findings suggest that Prime Time is
beginning to meet the challenges of system building with "great success."
Researchers' recommendations for continued progress include
ensuring sufficient communication about the quality improvement system among
new program participants and facilitating meetings with senior program
participant staff so they better understand expectations and ways to support
their staff.

Campus Support
Programs for Former Foster Youth Face a Complex of Challenges
|
 |
 |
This Chapin Hall study examined campus support programs in
two states (California and Washington) aimed at helping former foster
youth succeed in college. Researchers interviewed program directors and
collected data from students through a web-based survey. The study identified a
number of challenges facing campus support programs, as well as ways in which
these programs are helping foster youth make the transition to college. The study
lays the groundwork for an evaluation of program impact on student retention
and graduation rates.
