Leader Update
A Note about Training!

It is a new Girl Scout year and the training options are extensive!  If you are a new Leader or Co-Leader be sure to complete your New Leader Training - these courses are mandatory and very informative.  For experienced Leaders, there are more courses to enrich your Leader experience.

Girl Scouts offers many different ways to get training.  You can attend in person sessions or online sessions if that is more convenient.  Additionally, a fun- and information-filled day is offered annually - Discoveree.  This year Discoveree is being held on February 6th.

The Monday Mailer, the weekly email from the Northern California Council, always includes a long list of upcoming training sessions. If you are not already receiving the Monday Mailer (which we highly recommend), you can sign up here.

We encourage everyone to explore the many training options offered by Girl Scouts!

Camporee Annual Events:  We are looking for adults/troops interested in hosting a camporee for 2009-2010 year.  At this time there are no camporees planned for this year!  Camping is an important Girl Scout experience.  Please contact Christinia Zimmerman, Event Coordinator, 938-9966, if you are interested in hosting a camporee.  Below are the types of camporees we try to have annually for Lafayette Girl Scouts.

3rd Grade Brownie Brownoree
This overnight camping experience is usually held at Twin Canyons (a Council property in Lafayette!).  Girls who do not wish to spend the night are encouraged to stay through the evening campfire program.

4th/5th Grade Camporee
4th /5th Grade Camporee is a one- to two-night camping event for Juniors in 4th and 5th grade. Troops camp and prepare meals together, then participate in activities with other troops during the day and a campfire at night.

Cadette Camporee
Cadette Camporee is a one- to two-night camping event for Cadettes in grades 6, 7 and 8.  Troops camp and prepare meals together, then participate in activities with other troops during the day and a campfire at night.

MEMBERSHIP
Membership Coordinator: Interim Sandra Patterson 296-9281

We need your help with our membership numbers.  Have you registered for this year?  We are far behind in total number of girl scouts registered for 2009-2010 year compared to last year.  If you are a Juliette are you registered with the Lafayette Service Unit?  If not, please contact Kristi Buck, Juliette  Organizer..

Registration
Please get your registration to the Registrar, Geni Federas 944-4768, ASAP.  If you have not reregistered yet then you do not have insurance coverage from Girl Scouts since the new membership year began October 1.  This means you are not to have any meetings with girls until this has been turned into the Registrar.

School Organizers
Thinking of starting a troop?  Be sure to talk with your School Organizer!  The School Organizer is there to help you!  Along with recruiting and placing girls into troops, part of their job is to provide some guidance for new leaders and troops.  If they don't have the answer, at least they can steer you in the right direction!

Please contact your School Organizer at any time!  They are here to help!

SERVICE UNIT NEWS

Financial News:
Please remember our policy that troops participating in a Service Unit event should pay for the event with a single (or couple if you have late pays) troop check.  The service unit gets charged bank fees when the number of items we deposit in a month exceeds the number allowed by the bank.

Reimbursement from the Lafayette Service Unit: In order to be reimbursed for Service Unit activities you need to complete a Lafayette Service Unit Reimbursement Voucher/Check Request and provide receipts for all expenses. Please note it takes two weeks for processing.

Looking for a fun Community Service Project?
Consider Operation Happy Sock!
A fun, easy way to help homeless cats in your local animal shelter. J

What the Heck is a Happy Sock?
A Happy Sock is a catnip toy made from a sock. You can see several examples of Happy Socks to the right.

Happy Socks are super simple to make: just take a sock and stuff it with a fistful of polyfill and a big pinch of catnip. Tie a knot in the ankle and you've made a Happy Sock!

Happy Socks can be made from almost any kind of sock. And cats love Happy Sock catnip toys because they're big, fluffy and durable.

Let's celebrate 100 years of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting!

April 10, 2010 will mark the launch of the 3-year celebrations - the 100th day of the 100th year of Girl Guiding & Girl Scouting.

This date will also mark our celebrations in 2011 and 2012.

This activity pack is the first of 3, one each year, which will provide ideas for different age groups to celebrate each year.
