Lafayette Girl Scouts!

Service Unit Leader Meeting
Wednesday, January 28
7:00 to 8:30 pm

Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Lafayette

After several years of celebrating the 10-year Pin Ceremony in April, we are moving it back to January.  The girls eligble to receive a pin are very excited!  Additionally we will be hearing about various summer camps as well as events and programs.

Please Help Create the Lafayette Service Unit Basket!
Each year we put together a basket for the Council's Recognition Luncheon Silent Auction. This year we are putting together a basket with a "Bridging from the past to the future" theme.
We are still thinking about what to include, all suggestions are welcome! Please support the Association by making a small cash donation ($3 -$5) to offset our costs. A basket will be passed at the Leader Meeting next Tuesday to collect donations. Thanks for your help!

Remember, at least one leader or parent
must attend.

Gold Advice Night
Our Service Unit has held an informal event for the last two year where girls who have completed their Gold Awards talk with other scouts about their projects in an informal Q&A.  This year it will be held in early February in the evening (7:30 - 8:30) after many activities are done for the day.  It is generally held at Round Table in Moraga (and we provide pizza and drinks for the speakers) because they have a room we can reserve. Often girls, leaders and parents attend.

At this time I am looking for 2-4 girls that would be willing to spend an hour talking about their projects; deciding on a project, planning it, executing the plan and everything else that goes along with the project. I also need a leader who has been involved to help guide the discussion if necessary. If your girls are willing and available please let ask them to contact me and we can set a date.

10-year Pin Ceremony
This year we will be honoring the girls who have been members for 10 years at the January Leader meeting on 1-28-09.  The ceremony will take place from 7pm - 7:30 pm that evening. If you have girls in your troop that should be included in the ceremony please email their names and the name of one adult leader from your troop that will present them with their pin.  There are 14 troops from 9-12th grade and so far only 4 have responded. The deadline to provide their names so that they are included in the older girl newsletter has passed but you can still get on the list by contacting Anne before January 17th.

Leadership Opportunities:
May - Middle School Ice Cream Social recruiting event. Girls needed to plan a one-hour event for 5th-8th graders.  This has become a Lafayette tradition! 4-6 girls can plan this event; an event binder exists with all the details.

WORLD THINKING DAY 2009
PARTICIPATE IN AN ACTIVITY AND SHARE WHAT YOUR TROOP DID!

Each year on February 22, girls participate in activities, games and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. The theme for World Thinking Day 2009 is girls worldwide say "we can stop the spread of AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

For 2009 the Lafayette Service Unit is asking every troop to participate in a World Thinking Day Activity, and then send in an article (with pictures if possible) on what your troop did.  We will publish these articles in the Girl Scout Lafayette Spring Newsletter and also submit (with your approval) these to the local newspapers.  The community will learn how Lafayette Girl Scouts celebrated World Thinking Day!
To participate, pick one or more of the suggestions below, or define your own Thinking Day event!

Suggestions:
  1. Learn about one of the 5 countries selected to represent the different regions where Girl Scouts operate.  This year, girls voted and selected Costa Rica, Fiji, Ireland, Jordan and Kenya to represent the five regions of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)-Western Hemisphere, Asia/Pacific, Europe, the Arab region and Africa.
  2. Send postcards to troops in different parts of the world.  Write postcards to sister girl scouts in other parts of the United States and internationally.  There is a letter exchange web site that is open for matching troops until February 2009.
  3. Learn about HIV and how you can stop it from spreading.

Bridging
A number of troops are bridging to the next level at the end of the year.  At the back of each level handbooks there are Bridging Activities that your troops should be currently working on to ready your girls for their next big step in scouting.  Congratulations in advance!  We are lucky, we have our very own custom-built easy to put together bridge to use for your special ceremony.  To reserve it in advance contact Bridgekeeper, Cindy Lincoln.  Other ideas are to use a bridge in a park, backyard or even the Golden Gate Bridge.  Lafayette Elementary has an all-school bridging attended by hundreds.  It is a exciting evening for all and builds community with girls and adults.    Please cont act your School Organizer if you have any questions or need assistance with Bridging this Spring.

Outstanding Leader and Volunteer Awards
Everyone likes to feel appreciated for their volunteer service.  Whether in the form of a simple thank-you for a small job well done or a formal commendation for years of faithful service in a key position.  Now is the time of year when we begin nominations of special individuals for their outstanding efforts that affect Lafayette Girl Scouts in a meaningful way.  A person receiving an outstanding Volunteer or Outstanding Leader Pins stand far above the crowd.  Please take the time to nominate your fellow Troop Leaders and  Adult Volunteers.  Nominations are due to Linda Bailey by February 28.

Anniversaries
Each year we honor our Leaders that are celebrating 5 year anniversaries.  If this year is your 5th,10th, 15th,20th etc. year in Girl Scouting (your girl and adult combined), please contact Linda Bailey, to receive your acknowlegement and pin at the April Awards Ceremony.
