Book of Symbols:
Reflections On Archetypal Images

An excellent resource!
I never recommend "dream dictionaries" to people who are starting out in dreamwork as I find most of the standard dream dictionaries so limiting in their attempts to "define" a symbol, leaving little room for expansion beyond the two- or three-line definition for each symbol. However, instead I often recommend that dreamers explore "symbols dictionaries" as the ones that are well put together can be very helpful for evolving our understanding and awareness of the multi-layered, multi-dimensional nature of all symbols that appear in our dreams and synchronistic waking life experiences.
I recently ran across, in my opinion, an exceptionally well-crafted book, "The Book of Symbols; Reflections on Archetypal Images" (Taschen, 2010) I find myself referring to it more and more; during and after dreamwork sessions or whenever I get curious to learn more about the cross-cultural, cross-generational archetypal implications of any given symbol. Whether it be something as seemingly simple as "hair" or "teeth" or concepts as elusive as "transformation" or "shape-shifting," each symbol is given equal importance and depth. I love how the authors "discuss" the symbols rather than attempt to "define" them. The selected photographs and artwork are exquisite as well!
(Thanks to Kathy Taylor for the book recommedation and to Sarah Louis Hannah for the book review!)

Inspiring and Moving Story
Introduction to "Appointment with the Wise Old Dog" - Sarah Blum (widow of David Blum)
"David Blum's inner journey is expressed in his film Appt with the Wise Old Dog which was produced in 1998 as he was dying from cancer.
What would motivate a musician, a very private and shy man, to make a film of his spiritual journey during the final phase of metastatic cancer? David felt with all of his being that his inner experience did not belong to him alone. He also believed that everyone has the capacity to access their own inner reality, however irrational it may seem. His story is an invitation to enter into the process of self-discovery, which is of the highest value whatever our outer human condition and circumstances."
"I have studied and meditated on David Blum's extraordinary documentation of his dreams and inner work - the immense gifts that were given to him from his unconscious and poured into images and music. We are intrigued on all levels - emotional, imaginal, intellectual. Our hearts are split open as we watch the process of the inner marriage."
-Marion Woodman, Jungian analyst, author and visionary

Dream Symbol Moment
| | |
Dreams of Breathing Underwater
Time: 4:55
.
Listen to a discussion about the symbolism of what breathing underwater in a dream might mean:
- Is the dream image of "breathing underwater" helping us to feel less emotionally overwhelmed?
- Do our dreams of water evolve over time to show our progress with emotional challenges?
- Is the dream image inviting us to "dive in" more deeply into the experiences of our lives, no matter how challenging?

In the meantime, wishing you sweet dreams!
