National and Local News from the war against corporate rule. |
Greetings!
This Thursday, December 9th, and every 2nd Thursday of the month, Colorado Move To Amend will hold our monthly meeting at Panera Bread in Arvada at 77th Ave and Wadsworth Blvd (map here) . You are invited. We are working on several campaigns, tactics, and strategies, including Poltical Theatre, Slide Show presentations, local City resolution sponsorships, and collaborative events with other like-minded organizations. So if you would like to participate or learn more please come.
Below are some of the latest developments in our war against the rule of multinational corporations. Make no mistake about it! We are in a war. We are fighting for the survival of democracy in this country against an enemy that has no conscience, no morals, no hopes or dreams, an inanimate property that represents only its financial gain. They are buying our representatives and making our laws. Behind the mask of these mega-corporations are CEOs whose greed is exceeded only by their arrogance. And the corporate-sponsored majority on the Supreme Court are remaking our Constitution, stripping away our civil liberties and granting super-rights to inanimate corporations.
The piece below on Monsanto should give us hope that change is possible when people come together working for the common good.
A national event is being planned to commemorate the infamous SCOTUS ruling in Citizens United v. FEC on January 21, 2011. More on that next month.
Best regards,
Michael David Melio

Federal Court Orders First-Ever Destruction of a GMO Crop.
Orders Removal of Genetically Engineered Sugar Beet Seed Crop.
Finds Government and Monsanto rushed to illegally plant herbicide resistant crop.
SAN FRANCISCO - December 1 - Today Federal District Judge Jeffrey S. White issued a preliminary injunction ordering the immediate destruction of hundreds of acres of genetically engineered (GE) sugar beet seedlings planted in September after finding the seedlings had been planted in violation of federal law. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by Earthjustice and Center for Food Safety on behalf of a coalition of farmers and conservation groups. The lawsuit was filed on September 9, shortly after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed it had allowed the seedlings to be planted.
The court outlined the many ways in which GE sugar beets could harm the environment and consumers, noting that containment efforts were insufficient and past contamination incidents were "too numerous" to allow the illegal crop to remain in the ground. In his court order, Judge White noted, "farmers and consumers would likely suffer harm from cross-contamination" between GE sugar beets and non-GE crops. He continued, "The legality of Defendants' conduct does not even appear to be a close question," noting that the government and Monsanto had tried to circumvent his prior ruling which made GE sugar beets illegal.

BP Sued in Ecuadorian Court For Violating Rights of Nature
A coalition of environmentalists have filed a groundbreaking lawsuit in Ecuador against the oil giant BP for violating Ecuador's constitution which recognizes "the rights of Nature" across the globe. Plaintiffs include Nnimmo Bassey, the president of Friends of the Earth International and the Indian scientist Vandana Shiva. Vandana Shiva: "This morning we filed in the constitutional court of Ecuador this lawsuit defending the rights of nature in particular the right of the Gulf of Mexico and the sea which has been violated by the BP oil spill. We see this as a test case of the rights of nature enshrined in the constitution of Ecuador-it's about universal jurisdiction beyond the boundaries of Ecuador because nature has rights everywhere."

Fed aid in financial crisis went beyond U.S. banks to industry, foreign firms
By Jia Lynn Yang, Neil Irwin and David S. Hilzenrath Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, December 2, 2010; 12:15 AM
The financial crisis stretched even farther across the economy than many had realized, as new disclosures show the Federal Reserve rushed trillions of dollars in emergency aid not just to Wall Street but also to motorcycle makers, telecom firms and foreign-owned banks in 2008 and 2009. ...
"The American people are finally learning the incredible and jaw-dropping details of the Fed's multitrillion-dollar bailout of Wall Street and corporate America," said Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.), a longtime Fed critic whose provision in the Wall Street regulatory overhaul required the new disclosures. "Perhaps most surprising is the huge sum that went to bail out foreign private banks and corporations. As a result of this disclosure, other members of Congress and I will be taking a very extensive look at all aspects of how the Federal Reserve functions."

The New American Oligarchy
| |
Thursday 02 December 2010
"There is a war underway. I'm not talking about Washington's bloody misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq, but a war within our own borders. It's a war fought on the airwaves, on television and radio and over the Internet, a war of words and images, of half-truth, innuendo, and raging lies. I'm talking about a political war, pitting liberals against conservatives, Democrats against Republicans. I'm talking about a spending war, fueled by stealthy front groups and deep-pocketed anonymous donors. It's a war that's poised to topple what's left of American democracy."

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The Earth is the common heritage of humanity. It is a closed ecological system where each part is dependent upon the others for its survival.
The earth ecosystems are under tremendous stress caused by human activity, threatening collapse of the food chain.
We must move rapidly away from the consumer culture, the extensive use of plastic, and the fossil fuel economy that is destroying this earth.

I leave you with my mantra for a better world: - Reuse, reduce, recycle, remember the earth.
- Relocalize the economy; subsidize local American jobs.
- Go green, eat green, grow green, be green.
- Build democracy, establish community, vote.
- Abolish corporate personhood.
Democracy is not something you believe or a place to hang your hat, it is something you do. You participate. If we stop participating democracy crumbles. (paraphrasing Abby Hoffman).
