Greetings!

Well, beautiful, lush, hot summer is finally here.  Complete with the Colorado summer smorgasbord of cloudless azure skies, violent afternoon hailstorms, and gold, orange, and purple sunsets that stop you in your tracks.

I always notice the end of June, not just because of the spectacular weather but because it marks the halfway point in the year.  Invariably I find myself reflecting on what I set out to do at the beginning of the year and noticing where I may have fallen short of my goals.

One of my goals this year was to stretch myself to learn new things.  Brand new things.  To expand my mind in ways I've never done before.  To make sure I didn't settle into a comfortable (and dangerous) rut of doing only that which I knew how to do well.  I wanted to share my thoughts with you today on the subject of learning and why continuing to learn is so important to the creative entrepreneur.

I hope you enjoy today's article and that it gives you inspiration to always be learning something new.

Wishing you blessings and success,

Maxine

P.S.  A little about me:  Although I am a voice-over artist, on-camera spokesperson, and model by trade, during my 25-plus years in the business I've also become a very savvy solopreneur.  I know what it takes to start and grow a business, maintain an imaginative and creative mind-set, create lasting client relationships and, most importantly, thoroughly enjoy the whole process.

Are You Still Learning?
by Maxine Dunn

As a solo-professional, one of the most important things you can do to ensure the success of your business is to keep on learning.  You've got to keep pursuing new ways to expand your mind, increase your awareness, improve your skills, and explore new possibilities.

I'll say it again:  The success of your business depends upon your having an open, creative, inquisitive, learning, mind!  The more you know and the more you expand your awareness of what's possible, the more insight and passion and strategy you'll be able to bring to your business.

If you're serious about being an entrepreneur, it's vital to keep yourself thinking creatively and to cultivate a passion for growing.

Just think of the typical human learning curve.  From the very moment we're born we are learning.  Almost every moment of every day.  Whether it's learning to recognize other people's faces, tie our shoes, write the alphabet or use a telephone, every day of our lives is an immersion in learning.  And as we progress through kindergarten, elementary school, high school and college, whether we like it or not there is usually a steady stream of new information that we're required to assimilate.

Then suddenly we get a steady job, hit 30, 40, or 50, and for many of us our sharp, upward, learning trajectory levels off or, worse, starts declining.  I know I'm generalizing here but for the vast majority of people the learning of brand new things all but stops.

Although I do encourage you to improve your skills within your industry - learning new technology, writing techniques, marketing strategies, or equipment function, etc. - I'm talking about learning things you have never experienced before and taking an active interest in stretching your mind in completely new ways.

In addition to helping you grow your business, using different regions of your brain and being involved in problem-solving tasks are two of the best anti-aging strategies there are.  You'll not only enjoy more success, you'll feel younger getting there!

As an added bonus you might find that taking dance, art, or cooking classes reveals a hidden talent you didn't know you had.  Or that a course in photography, writing, or web design may give you brilliant insights on how to brand your new business.  And learning with like-minded peers could open new doors of expression within your business or personal life as well.

So, where do you begin?

I have a take-action challenge for you this week and I want you to please do this:

  • First - write down a list of six or seven things that interest you that you'd like to learn more about.
I just did this exercise myself and here is my list.  Maybe this will help you think of some interests of your own:

~  Learning Italian

~  Refinishing antiques

~  Writing children's books

~  Digital photography

~  Astronomy

~  Calligraphy

  • Second - I want you to choose one of the items on your list that you feel most drawn to and TODAY (or tomorrow if it's night time now) I want you to take at least one step to moving your desire forward:  Request a catalogue.  Make a phone call.  Google your topic.  Find a class in your area.  And actively take the next indicated step in learning something new.  Put it on the calendar.  Make time for a class or classes.  Get excited about becoming an active learner again!

You'll not only feel the exhilaration and thrill of allowing a whole new creative energy to enter your life; you'll also feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing that you followed through and took a very important step in expanding your mind and increasing your awareness of the world around you.
