Go Fishing, The Clock is Ticking

Where is the boat?

 Hidden Boat

The boat is clearly displayed on the DownScan but no boat seen on the side scan.

Nice fish on the DownScan (DS) that are the same fish on the 2D sonar.

Isn't the side scan supposed to "see" out farther than the DownScan?

The DS and side scan both have wider cones than the 2D. The difference between the DS and side scan is the DS is aimed straight down like the 2D sonar and the side scan is aimed to the side so it "sees" out farther.

Sonar displays a target (fish, bottom or boats) as the distance from the transducer. The boat is 30 feet from the transducer and the bottom is 11 feet from the transducer on the DownScan screen.

The side scan range is 20 feet so the boat can't be displayed until the range is increased. That is where the boat is hiding!

Doc's Product Review

Trolling Rods

I just got back from trolling on Lake Erie collecting video for the upcoming trolling DVD. I worked with Capt. Ross Robertson and we both have the same opinion on the best all around trolling rod. I have used many trolling rods over my career and Ross and I prefer the present edition of the Mr. Walleye 8' 6" Trolling rod. I say present edition because Gary Roach has been designing rods for years and they are not all the same. So why is a good choice?

  1. 8'6" is long enough and telescopic to fit in my Crestliner center rod locker
  2. The right action for trolling boards (soft enough for fighting all size fish and enough backbone for Lake Erie walleyes)
  3. Metal guides (I hate broken inserts in guides and I have had cracked ones)
  4. The right length handle for trolling and fitting into rodholders

This is the model # MWS86MCT
