Dubuque AIM Tournament Review
This tournament was very interesting with fluctuating water levels. I found many great fishing spots with few fish. I found a big fish spot that failed except for one fish on day 2 (big fish for the tournament) and I needed one more to make the cut. The fish was caught on a Slurpie SWIM'N Grub casting jigs.
My co-angler had another big one one for a short time. I stayed in the area all day hoping they would bite again but no more bites. I finished but I had fun dreaming of big fish.
I used the Dubuque rig part of the time and caught fish on both the jig and crankbait. i used a Slurp jig because of the bait keeper wires and a Slurpies Jerk Shad since I wanted a large bait for "pigs".
I use 2 barrel swivels with the crankbait lead 3-4 feet and the jig lead 12-18 inches. It works well in narrow trolling areas when using 4 rods are too crowded.
The best crankbaits were the Salmo Hornet 5F Black Tiger and Red Crawdad and 5SDR in Black Tiger . The Shadrap # 5 in orange was 2nd best. I tried many different lures and didn't catch enough fish for a good comparison so I used what caught fish in practice for the tournament. |
