Tournament Crankbait Contest
Akaska, SD
The AIM Akaska tournament had many opportunities to catch fish. I trolled deep with lead line (6-9 colors) targets fish at 30-45 feet deep. The Salmo Sting 9S won the leadline contest and caught the biggest walleye fishing deep at 21 inches. I trolled over the trees during the tournament in 20 FOW with my friend Jesse Buechel (the AIM bull rider, he rode a bull again this year and was tossed like a flea as I predicted). This trolling method worked with many crankbaits with the Rapala Husky Jerk winning and the Salmo Perch 8SDR second. I also had good luck with the Rapala 18 floater but it was not as predicable. Needless to say the crankbait box is much lighter after this tournament. Trolling trees is very expensive. |

Tournament Tactics
The AIM Akaska South Dakota Walleye Classic tournament had many opportunities to catch fish. Oahe is full of fish and baitfish. The walleyes are what I predominately caught but I also caught many smallmouth bass. The sonar almost always had fish displayed no matter if the depth was 15 feet or 60 feet. I caught fish with live bait from 15 feet to 42 feet, I caught fish trolling from 12 feet to 45 feet but I ended up fishing over trees in 20 feet because these fish were slightly bigger. My friend Jesse (the bull) Buechel won the tournament easily and I finished a distant 4th. Many anglers were trolling the trees but this pattern will fade because these are new trees that grew during the drought and I have found they don't last long on Oahe. Besides if the water drop 5 feet they are not fishable. I caught many fish trolling at 15-25 feet with Fireline and at 30-40 with leadline. If you are looking for a fishing vacation this year I would go somewhere on Oahe because of the fantastic catching besides the amazing views of South Dakota. |
