 Fish or Weeds?

Weeds and Fish can look the same on sonar. I have some examples on new technology to demonstrate the difference.

You can now import your side scan recording into DrDepth and display them as the track you followed while you were recording the data. This image shows the track (ignore it) and look at how the bottom hardness is displayed. That is the shape of the structure. You can also overlay depth lines on this image and create waypoints of the image. Read More

Tournament Crankbait Contest

Saginaw

The Salmo Bullhead 6SDR in multiple colors was easily the winner in the river. 2nd place was the jointed shad rap #5 custom painted plum crazy from Down River Tackle.

Brimley

It was a tie between the floating Rapala #11 in firetiger vs. the Hornet 3F in red crawdad.

It will become obvious that my favorite lures are Rapala and Salmo. I have many others but they are my "go to" choices so they catch more fish!

Doc's tournament Schedule

I will be fishing all 5 AIM tournaments in 2010.

AIM is an organization of anglers who started a new tournament circuit using CRR. Catch Release Record. You catch the fish, measure it and release it. Slot limits are not applicable since no fish is kept.

Saginaw Bay AIM

Saginaw was like pre-fishing for 2 different locations. Saginaw Bay had a open water bite using boards and spinners to catch open water walleyes. The fishing was good but the size was not winning fish were I found them. I used Nightcrawler harnesses with purple blades and Northland holographic silver blades working the best in sizes 3-5. The river was flooding and very muddy for most of the pre-fishing. The river cleared up 2 days before the tournament and I caught some walleyes trolling crankbaits and pitching the shoreline with a jig and Slurpies but I didn't have enough spots to gain confidence.

 Brimley AIM

Brimley had fish close the take-off and I found better fish 50 miles from the launch but I had to pass through the locks and in hindsight, I should have made the run as there was no wind. I am not up to 50 mile runs in windy conditions; I leave that for the tough guys. It was an artificial only tournament and it was painful to see local anglers catch more fish with nightcrawlers while I used artificial baits. It was no contest but it is what it is. The locals were wondering why the pros couldn't catch them!!
