Greetings!
This past Wednesday, July 7th was Opening Day for SSBx's
sponsorship of the Mott Haven Farmers Market, and the
beginning of an exciting market season! Residents of Mott Haven
purchased an array of fresh fruits and vegetables from local New York
and New Jersey farmers. Customers also enjoyed nutrition workshops and
cooking demonstrations provided by the Stellar Markets program of the
NYC Department of Health & Hygiene. The Farmers Market is hosted
and managed by Padre Plaza Community Garden. Volunteer
groups from New York Cares and NYSUM (New York School of Urban
Ministry) came out to support the Market and encourage Bronxites to
purchase fresh, locally-grown produce. SSBx's very own GreenFab Fellows
and a youth group from the Claremont Neighborhood Center will be
volunteering on a continuous basis throughout the summer. Please come
by and learn from them first-hand what SSBx is all about -- and how you
can support our ongoing efforts to make a more sustainable community. This work is extremely
important -- the South Bronx owns the unfortunate statistic of being
America's most obese community and has the most severe
hunger-related problems in the country. It's
clear that providing access to local, healthy and affordable
food is essential. SSBx is happy to work with Padre Plaza Community
Garden and sponsor the Mott Haven Farmers Market. Please stop by! Our
Sustainable Best,

Miquela Craytor Executive Director

Mott Haven Farmers Market Opening Day
Cooking Demos and Nutrition Workshop by NYC Dept. of Health | Local residents joined SSBx as we celebrated the grand opening of our newly sponsored Mott
Haven Farmers Market this past Wednesday and took part in nutritional workshops, collected free recipes, got free gifts and sampled a deliciously refreshing salad with swiss chard, diced peaches, and raisins.. a great treat for a sweltering hot day.
SSBx staff members came out to show their support to the local community. | The Mott Haven Farmers Market is proud to present organically grown
produce coming from Wassaic Community Farm, Trinity Farms,
and Nolasco
Farms. In addition, tasty baked goods prepared by Stylish Cakes and
Javin Curtin will be available for sale. The Mott Haven Farmers Market accepts EBT Cards and WIC Vouchers.
Take advantage of the NYC Health Department's Health Bucks program and
receive one health buck (worth $2) for every $5 spent.
Local organizations that wish to present their
information at the market on Wednesday's are also welcome. Please contact Francesca Ramsawak at framsawak@ssbx.org, or call 646.400.5432 for

Seeking Local Talent
The Farmers Market Federation of NY would like to assemble
a list of people who are willing and able to appear at their local
market(s).
Musicians, clowns, storytellers, educators, mimes, acrobats, crafts
and
cooking demonstrations, etc., will be added to a list on their website for all farmers markets to reference as well as to promote you and your talents.
SSBx
is seeking local talents that wish to be a part of the Mott Haven
Farmers Market. If you are interested in donating your services to the Mott Haven Farmers Market and promoting yourself along the way, you are welcome to showcase your talent on market days.
Please note that any performances must be family-friendly.
For more
information, please contact Francesca at framsawak@ssbx.org
