Plan a Summer Party

I love a party. I
like to go to parties, I like to host parties and I like to plan parties - much
to Kirk's chagrin. My favorite party is
our annual 4th of July block party. When
I was little, my parents always hosted the 4th at our house. All the neighbors would gather together,
BBQ up some dinner, and set off boxes of
fireworks. I remember being chased down
the street by many a pin wheel! Many years ago Kirk and I decided we should have a July
4th block party. We figured we had to
invite the whole neighborhood since we were going to have it in the street out
front of our house. And why not invite
all of our other friends too! Since then
our block party has become somewhat famous.
As a matter of fact when a local teacher told her
students she was moving to Lark street several of them said "that's where
they have the pig roast!" A good
party can instill a sense of community in your neighborhood. I know our annual party has helped my neighbors be come great friends. You too can plan a party - it's not as hard as it may
seem. You simply need to provide the
place, perhaps a main course, and a bit of organization and you can have an
awesome party in no time. Pick your
date; make an invitation or e-vite your friends, ask them to bring a side dish
or dessert and some drinks to share and Voila - a party is born! The only hard part is preparing a main course -
especially if you are having a lot of people.
But BBQ lends itself to feeding a crowd!
It's easy to cook chicken, burgers
and dogs for a lot of people.
Better yet, come to our BBQ
Cooking School 201 and we'll have you preparing home smoked briskets, pork
shoulders and ribs in no time.
Here
are some tips for planning the perfect party: Main
Course Portioning: Plan
for about 1¼ pieces of meat per person (chicken, burgers, dogs and brats). Costco sells frozen beef patties in ¼ and ½ pound
sizes -there just like those old college frat house sliders! For a fancier main course, come to KT's for some ribs or meat by the pound (see our Specials & Deals). Condiments: Consider some fancy condiments to spice up
your burgers and dogs, like homemade
relish, slaw to top brats or Chipotle Mayo for the burgers. Drinks: Plan on about 1 ½ beers per adult (over 30). Buy a variety including
some light, some Mexican and some micro brews (it's also nice to have a couple of bottles of wine on hand for those non-beer drinkers).
Save some money by
providing lemonade for the kids instead of soda. I find many cans of half drunk soda's at the
end of our 4th of July party. Use Country Time lemonade mix and add pure lemon juice to make it taste fresh and tart.
Paper
products and side dishes: Costco
and Sam's club are great places to buy plates, forks, spoons and cups. Kirk and I stock up at the beginning of the
summer so we're always ready. Warehouse stores are also a great places to purchase buns and side dishes like potato
salad and chips. If you are providing
side dishes, plan on about 4 ounces per, person per side. Make sure you have plenty of ice on hand for soda's and
beer and don't forget the cups!
