Greetings!

We are so excited to begin the fall season with over 20 Parenting 101 Classes starting up in Kentucky and our first out-of-state class starting in Tampa, Florida!  Special thanks to Laura Lichtefeld who is flying down there next week to train several facilitators and teach the first session.  Laura, you are amazing!  Mary Beth Uberti and our program development committee are working on a great line up of speakers for our Wake up and Smell the Coffee series...hope you can attend one or two!  Our army of parent volunteers continues to grow and we are both amazed and grateful! Take comfort in the fact that you are not alone in your desire to raise incredible teenagers.  Together we're doing it!
The Smart Step Family

Coffee SeriesJohn and Emily Stewart, presenters and step-family for over nine years, will be sharing
"The Smart Step-Family, Seven Steps to a Healthy Family" written by Ron L. Deal.

Discover the keys to growing healthy relationships in your stepfamily as John and Emily
provide practical, realistic solutions to the issues that stepfamilies face. A great event for parents currently in stepfamilies, or thinking about creating one.  Come learn how to:
· Recognize the unique personality and place of each family member.
· Solve the everyday puzzles of step-parenting and stepchildren relationships.
· Develop communication skills to deal with ex-spouses.
· Honor families of origin while developing new traditions.
· Invest the time to grow the stepfamily slowly rather than look for instant results.

Last month's Alcoholism/Addiction A-Z

We were thrilled to have a "packed house" for Dr. Brady's presentation.  If you were not able to attend, or had to leave before Dr. Brady concluded, here are some specific things he suggested parents can do to PREVENT alcoholism and/or drug addiction in their children.

1. Build intimacy into your home by developing relationships built on trust (you can learn how to do this in our Parenting 101 class!)
2. Keep communication open (they need to know there is an open ear at home and they will never be rejected)
3. Be consistent (in your attitudes, behaviors, discipline, etc.)
4. Set up a supportive home, a place where your child feels supported, have meals together, pray together, provide a model for successful living
5. If alcoholism or addiction runs in the family, "moderate drinking" is NOT a good idea.  Shut down the idea that drinking/drugging is part of a normal lifestyle
6. Teach them the risks of drinking...educate, educate, educate
7. Guide them as they pick their friends (playmates) and encourage them to run with the winners.  If they start to hang with the wrong crowd, help them change playpens, play toys and play pals.  Their environment must change!
Thank you for the opportunity to educate, equip, encourage and engage you as you raise your incredible teens!

Sincerely,

Jean Schumm & Staff
