Parents:  Just a few more days and the kids will be out of school!  Take this opportunity to sit down with them and create a "Family Bucket List" of things you ALL would like to accomplish this summer as a family.  Perhaps a trip, a movie together, a project, learn something new, etc. Be sure to ask your kids their opinions...they'll really appreciate it!

Cyberbullying...it's a big, technical word, and doesn't sound like anything a typical child would get involved in, but did you know that just a simple negative comment communicated on-line (or texted), is considered cyberbullying?  Think about this...technology has made it so that one embarrassing comment said about someone isn't just overheard by one or two people. It can go to hundreds of people with just the push of a button.  Now go back to when you were a tween or teen.  Do you remember how sensitive you were to what people thought of you and how badly you just wanted to fit in?  How would you have felt if someone said something negative about you in front of an auditorium full of people?  That is the equivalent and unfortunate reality of what cyberbullying is like for our kids.

 A review of our latest
Wake up and Smell The Coffee
Speaker Event
Coffee SeriesLast week at OP Headquarters, we hosted "Choices - An Interactive Play on Cyberbullying and Teen Suicide,"  which was presented by the wonderful "Looking for Lilith" Theatre Company.  Approximately 70 parents and kids attended & participated...it was AMAZING!
If you missed it, don't worry, we'll be sure to book this show again next year because it was a priceless experience for all kids and parents!

Here's what some parents had to say about the event:

"Being in a group of parents AND kids, all witnessing together the ramifications of cyberbullying -  was powerful. Bringing it into the open and discussing ideas for what to do in similar situations felt very empowering.  Somehow it feels less threatening now - exposure and awareness lessens the fear."                       -Alice Gob

"The performance on cyberbullying was terrific!  It was fun, informative and educational to all teens and parents.  I loved how seeing the ideas from people were put to life and how the outcomes were changed.   It makes us all stop and think about how we react, and to be sure to watch carefully for clues and listen carefully to what our children are saying to us.

I learned many things about "im", facebook and technology in general.  Specifically, I learned warning signs if my child is being bullied or being a bully, and steps to take in either case.  My daughter learned most importantly not to be silent if this is happening to her or a friend, and to tell us, even if she/they have been a part of it.  I also
realize the consequences of responding to a bully message, and to do so calmly and with only the intent of letting them know this must stop or proper authorities will be notified, as opposed to reacting with a harmful statement back."
  -Jill Bentsen

The warning signs of cyberbullying are similar to those for traditional bullying in terms of emotional effects; however, there are some differences. For example, before today's technology, if a child was being bullied, telltale signs were bruises or torn clothing; parents don't get those warning signs with cyberbullying.  Also - if a child was being bullied at school, they could find peace at home when they were away from school and the bully.  With today's technology (cell phones/texting, email, Facebook, iPod Touch, etc), the bully never goes away because they have access to your child 24/7.  The bully is in your child's pocket.  Parents - please realize how easily your child can be bullied, without you knowing what's going on.

Here are some signs to look for -
  • appears sad, moody, or anxious
  • avoids school
  • withdraws from or shows a lack of interest in social activities
  • experiences a drop in grades or decline in academic performance
  • appears upset after using the computer or being online
  • appears upset after viewing a text message on a cell phone

If a child shows any of these warning signs, it's important to talk with them and investigate their online presence to determine whether cyberbullying is occurring and to offer help.  Parents - our kids need us to look out for them, especially in this technical world which is their everyday environment!  Get online, get a Facebook Page, check texts, im's, etc!  Put yourself in their world!

Facility Update

Our new facility is awesome and we were thrilled to use our 2nd floor training room for the first time when we hosted the "Choices" play last week.  Special thanks to Mr. John Underwood, an OP Parent who donated 6 wonderful conference table chairs!  They are beautiful and we are truly grateful.  And special thanks to Lisa Love, Volunteer Bookkeeper, who arranged for us to borrow 45 chairs from her church (The River) so we could seat "most" of our parents who attended the play.

Here is our Current Wish List:

-Windows Server w/5 User License ($829)

-60 Chairs for 2nd floor training room ($1500)  Each one costs $25, so if you'd like to purchase one we welcome your donation!

    Projector/Screen/Labor - $4000
    Sound System/Labor - $1000
    1 Wireless Lapel Microphone - $700

    1 Wall Mount Video Camera - $200

-1 Computer for Sales Team
-Large Dry Erase Board for Conference Room
-40 to 45" Flat Screen TV w/DVD Player for lobby
-65" Flat Screen TV (or Projector/Screen) for 1st floor training room

Our careful planning has been done with the vision of creating a warm, welcoming, but hi-tech atmosphere.  We believe it is very important that our organization embraces technology and uses it to reach as many parents as possible.

THIS MONTH'S PARENTING TIP:

Stay calm when your teen tells you something that would normally get you upset.  STOP.  LISTEN TO WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY.  Let your child know you're there to work through any issue...big or small.  It's vital to partner with your child if they're facing tough issues, instead of judging and lecturing them.
Keep on parenting, stay strong, you're not alone!
