Greetings!
As you will see in this week's special message from PA Co-Presidents Alex Cai and Larry Wood, Stuyvesant has just received both bad news and good news about its budget. Like all other schools, Stuyvesant can expect a 4% cut for next year, a very significant reduction to Stuy's budget. However, our first-time eligibility for "Title I" funds, based on the large percentage of families eligible for reduced cost or free lunch, could bring us over $1.5 million in new funds. This potential is well worth the work it will take on our part and the school's to actually receive those funds. Please attend the May 25 PA meeting to do your part -- and to vote for next year's Executive Board! (Remember -- nominations are still open for another 10 days.)
Thanks!

Special Message From PA Co-Presidents Larry Wood & Alex Cai
Dear PA members,
We have some bad news and also some very good news on the school budget.
First the bad: as you may have heard in the news, the Mayor released his proposed City budget for next year. The cut to public education, while not as deep as some agencies, was 4% overall and projected the possible lay-off of over 6000 teachers. Last week, the Department of Education (DOE) notified all principals to expect a cut "greater than last year". A 4% cut to Stuy's $17 million dollar school budget would be a loss of $680,000. This would be very difficult for the school to absorb and address.
The very good news: Principal Teitel was also informed this week by the DOE that Stuyvesant HS had qualified for the first time ever to receive federal "Title I" funding. This eligibility is by virtue of the fact that well over 40% of our families were deemed eligible for free or reduced cost lunches. Huge thanks to all the parents who filled out and returned the "free lunch" forms! Title I eligibility will entitle Stuyvesant to over $1.5 million in new funding. We are fortunate that this new funding will help offset the current State and City budget cuts and effectively restore other funding that has been cut during the last two years.
However, we still have work to do. To obtain the new funding, the Stuy Administration and SLT must develop a basic spending plan and get a vote of approval from you -- the Parents' Association (PA).
We urge parents to attend our Tuesday, May 25 PA meeting to hear a full report and learn the latest details from Principal Teitel. There will also be an important vote regarding the "Title I" funding. Please come, listen and ask questions!
We also ask that you read the articles featured in the latest issue of the PA Bulletin for more school and PA news. You can find the Bulletin at:

Join our panel of current and alumni parents for a candid discussion of the college process, followed by Q & A. What were their families' experiences like? How did things go right -- or wrong? Knowing what they do now, how might they have handled the process differently? (Please note the corrected date above.) |

IMPORTANT NEWS FOR SENIORS
GRADUATION ALERT
Dear Seniors and Parents:
Due to circumstances beyond our control Stuyvesant was forced to change this year's graduation date and venue. Graduation for the Class of 2010 will now take place on Thursday, June 24th at the Palace Theater. The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. The Palace Theater is located on Broadway at 175th Street in Manhattan.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Hopefully this announcement is early enough to amend any previous plans. We look forward to another fantastic graduation, this time at the Palace Theater.
Sincerely, James A. Lonardo Senior Activities Advisor |
