Greetings!

As the winter holiday season approaches, we have important updates and requests for you.  This update reminds you that it's crucial for everyone to send in their "free lunch" form -- it could mean between $1-2 million to Stuyvesant.  Scroll down or click on "Free Lunch" form in the box to the left to read more.  We also want to let you know why certain after-school activities have stopped for now, and how the PA can fund those activities again with the approval of the PA membership.  To learn more about this issue, scroll down or click on "After-school activities" to the left.

As always, let me know if you have any concerns or comments.  I look forward to continuing to stay in touch with you and to fielding your questions and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Florence Hutner
Corresponding Secretary
We still need everyone's help in sending in their "free lunch" form!

As we requested last week, if you didn't already send in your "free lunch" form, please send it in now.  This is such an easy way to counter some of the severe budget cuts that we are anticipating -- it's like making a financial contribution to the school without writing a check!

Apparently Stuyvesant HS is still just short of the 40% threshold to qualify as a "Title 1" school---which would result in a significant increase in Federal education funding to the school, potentially over $1-Million dollars in additional aid.  We still need every family to send in their form.

To obtain an original 2009-2010 Application for Free and Reduced-Price
Meals in any of the 15 languages available, please contact the school
office at 212-312-4800 (ext 2 -- student services) or the DOE Office of School-Food Help Desk at (718) 707-4400, or go to:

The forms have been put up on the PA website, at www.stuy-pa.org -- you can download them there.  Since the form must be in red ink, if you do not have a color printer, have your child please pick it up at school.

The forms must be returned by the end of the year; you can mail them to:

Suspension of after-school extracurricular and tutoring programs and PA plan to restore these activities

The December 10, 2009 New York Times reported that the Department of Education has been asked to prepare for a 1.5 percent midyear cut and a 4 percent cut for next autumn's entering class.  You can see the full article for details and the painful choices facing many schools and Principals by clicking here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/11/education/11school.html?_r=2&hpw

Like other Principals around the city, Principal Teitel was notified by the Department of Education to prepare for a mid-year budget cut due to the City budget deficit.  In response, Mr. Teitel has been forced to eliminate all "per-session" funding money used to pay faculty advisors for overseeing the various clubs and publications, and for administering after-school academic tutoring and AP test review. As of December 1st, most "per-session" funded activities were suspended.

The PA executive board is quickly taking steps to restore as much of the "per-session" funding in the school's budget as possible so programs can promptly resume. At the December PA meeting, members will be asked to approve an appropriation of $60,000 from the PA budget for this purpose. Please attend the December 15 PA meeting for more information and next steps.
