Greetings!
Welcome to our new, more effective email news! We have starting working with a new email list manager, and we think you'll like the results. More important than just brightening up the look of our email blasts, our aim is to have robust technical support for our emails, including making it easier for parents to subscribe and unsubscribe from the listserv. We also hope that you'll find this email more reliable and easier to read. As always, let me know if you have any concerns or comments. I look forward to continuing to stay in touch with you and to fielding your questions and suggestions.
Sincerely,
Florence Hutner Corresponding Secretary

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS:
WE NEED EVERYONE'S HELP!
If you didn't already send in your "free lunch" form, please send it in now!
It has come to our attention that Stuyvesant HS is very near the 40% threshold to qualify as a "Title 1" school---which would result in a significant increase in Federal education funding to the school, potentially over $1-Million dollars in additional aid. Needless to say, this would be an enormous boost to the school struggling with budget cuts. This "Title 1" aid is determined by the number of families and students who are eligible for reduced-price lunch. It is very important to respond to the school's request to complete the application to ensure that every family who could possibly be eligible for reduced-price lunch does apply. Not only would your student save money on school lunch, the school could receive over $400 in funding for each and every student in the whole school, aid that is sorely needed!
To obtain an original 2009-2010 Application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals in any of the 15 languages available, please contact the school office at 212-312-4800 (ext 2 -- student services) or the DOE Office of School-Food Help Desk at (718) 707-4400, or go to:
http://www.opt-osfns.org/osfns/meals/default.aspx .
Thank you. Larry Wood and Alex Cai

OTHER NEWS
Saturday December 12
Clothing Drive for the Homeless
For anyone who is interested in helping the Coalition for the Homeless with their annual coat drive: new and gently-used hats, gloves, scarves, socks and blankets are being collected at the Coalitions' mid-Manhattan drop-off site at St. Bart's Church, 51st St between Park and Lexington Aves. More information is available from Derron Lee at derronlee@yahoo.com.
Say No to education budget cuts: The Stuy PA Executive Board urges parents to contact their elected officials to urge that funding to public education NOT be cut, especially mid-year when it will be particularly disruptive. To date, final decisions on the extent of proposed state and city cuts have not been made. Negotiations with the Governor and Mayor continue, NOW is the perfect time to contact legislative officials and deliver the following message: NO MORE CUTS TO EDUCATION! First, link to find out who represents you in the Senate, the Assembly and NYC Council and then leave them a message or send a letter. Find your senator at http://www.nysenate.gov, your assembly member at http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem and your city councilmember at: http://council.nyc.gov/html/members/members.shtml. TOLL-FREE calls to Albany: leave a message by calling (877) 255-9417, for the governor's office, the Senate or the Assembly. Letters can also be faxed or emailed from www.OurKidsCantWait.org. Make a call and send a letter today! |
If you know of any Stuy parents who are not receiving this email, feel free to forward it to them or to let me know their name and email address. Thanks! | |
