Walk into Rheinlander Bakery in Olde Town  and the enticing aroma of freshly baked strudels, tortes and pastries will transport you to an era bygone, a simpler time when  bakers  baked goodies from scratch.   The curved-glass showcases seem to stretch forever with delectable treats that stir  childhood memories for generations of Arvada's families.  Whether it's the persian rolls, the sticky buns or an incredible 7 layer cake torte, almost  everyone has a  sweet  favorite in this  hometown bakery.

Rheinlander2The bakery started in the early 1950s  as the Arvada Bakery and became an authentic German bakery in 1963 when Jakob and Katharina Dimmer bought the business at 5721 Olde Wadsworth Blvd.  Jakob and Katharina  lived in the upstairs apartment with their twin sons, then 4.  The Dimmers built a hugely popular family bakery based on their old world craftsmanship   which they began to teach to their twins, Ed and Andrew at an early age.   One of the twins, Ed, together with his wife Maro, are currently the proud owners of Rheinlander.  Many customers today remember Ed serving them at the counter when he was barely tall enough to see over it, just at the age of 9.

RheinlanderownersEd and Maro continue Ed's parents European style baking while creating new remarkable traditions of their own. They still make their home upstairs, but downstairs the family based bakery has expanded to become the home of a  true small business with  12-15 employees whose purpose is to make your world sweeter. Some of the bakery's growth is fuelled by  an innovative   selection of  baked goods that are sugar free, gluten free and some even vegan.  Ed Dimmer first turned to alternative baking to meet Maro's health needs.  Maro is both as a cancer survivor and a diagnosed celiac. Celiac disease is an auto-immune reaction to gluten, which unfortunately is found in wheat, rye, barley and oats, all traditional ingredients in a bakery. Ed quickly RheinlanderEddiscovered that he had  found his true calling in the challenges posed by gluten free, sugar free baking.  He really enjoys combining the science of chemistry, which he studied at CU Boulder, with the creative aspects of artisanal baking he learned from his dad.  Ed and Maro developed a true passion for helping others thru their baking. The bakery today offers alternatives to most of their traditional pastries and cakes.  Here you will find sugar free napoleons and cream horns, gluten free German chocolate cakes and éclairs and lots of other bakery desserts that are  free from gluten, sugar and other allergens such as dairy. Ed now works with what he calls a "new alphabet of baking", new flours such as sorghum and amaranth and new sweeteners such as xylitol and stevia.  He  has pioneered some of the most delicious gluten free, sugar free cakes you will find anywhere. Over the last 10 years,   Rheinlander bakery is building a new reputation as a  leader in alternative baking across Colorado and the US.  Any given weekend, you will find people coming from all over Colorado and sometimes adjacent states to stock up on gluten free specialties as well as the traditional German strudels and coffeecakes.

Rheinlanders111111Be sure to visit the bakery on 11/11/11 because they are planning a great special for you.  On 11/11 they will be selling their fabulous two pound fruit strudels or coffeecakes or a dozen tasty cookies at $11 dollars each. They will also be offering their sugar free strudels and their gluten free coffeecakes at this great price.    The sale will go on all day and there's no need to order in advance, just show up.   If you cannot make it on that Friday the bakery is open 7 days a week and extends a 10% discount to all chamber members.  Just tell them the Chamber sent you.
