The Arvada Fire Protection District has been selected as a finalist for the Pepsi Refresh Grant for the month of June. Each month, Pepsi is giving away $1.3 million to fund grant ideas. After the voting ends on the last day of each month, the top 10 ideas in each dollar value are awarded. Arvada Fire is attempting to receive $50,000 to turn a vacant fire station into a Fire & Life Safety Education Center. The fire station, located at 9190 W. 84th Avenue, sits on an acre of property and is adjacent to the huge Arvada Volunteer Firefighter Park. There is a functional building on the property and a large parking lot that could accommodate school busses. The money would allow Arvada Fire to transform the interior of the building and to build the props that would be necessary to allow for true "hands-on" learning. The maintenance and the staffing of the Education Center would be financially maintained by Arvada Fire. To find and vote for our idea, go to www.refresheverything.com/arvadafire. You can vote for the idea one time per day, per email address. Arvada Fire Protection District maintains 8 active stations throughout 41 square miles in the City of Arvada, the City of Wheat Ridge and unincorporated Jefferson County. The District employees 118 full and part-time paid and 45 volunteer and volunteer reserve personnel who serve approximately 115,000 citizens. The current mill levy for the District is 9.48. In 2009, our Communications center answered over 45,000 calls from citizens; Fire/EMS personnel responded to 10.463 calls for assistance; Fire Prevention Personnel completed 1843 inspections, 390 plan reviews, and 40 investigations; Training Division personnel conducted 227 separate trainings and District personnel completing a total of over 7200 hours of training. SENIORS OF THE SAHARA
A Romantic Comedy: Sylvia Goldberg, a respectable retired New Jersey school teacher, brings home more than just souvenirs upon returning from her grandson's wedding in Israel. Sylvie's troubles begin when she realizes that the old teapot she purchased at an outdoor market is actually a priceless relic containing a geriatric genie "Eugene" with a bad back and a penchant for vodka and V8. Keeping Eugene a secret from her three best friends, Mabel, Thelma and Fannie, proves to be nearly as difficult as protecting herself from Eugene's former master who follows Sylvie home and threatens her at knifepoint. Be careful what you wish for Sylvie Goldberg! You never know, it might come true. Seniors of the Sahara is a magical romantic comedy for seniors and "juniors" of all ages. Age appropriate - all.
